Blair Bratach, Kirkmichael and Strathardle.

Dave4976 Merseyside
Review Submitted: July 30, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Kirkmichael is a pleasant village about half way along the Strathardle Valley, and as soon as one enters the Valley from either end one is aware of an extra layer of quiet beauty. There is a feeling of being cut off from the bustle of the other roads of ones journey and soon the history of a place that has probably changed little in the last hundred years surrounds you.

This feeling of history is nicely accentuated by a couple of photographs on display at Blair Bratach of the Strathardle Games of the early 1930s. One looks at those and some of the other pictures on display and they establish a sense of time and place.
The property itself is the quietest of holiday locations, with the Banner Field viewed from the large lounge window stretching green and empty before one. Of course things are probably livelier during the week of the Games themselves, held on the Banner Field to this day. While behind the house is the public footpath, little used by walkers in my experience, but in fact the Cateran Trail, a traditional route used for centuries by cattle rustlers taking cattle from east to west.

Inside Blair Bratach is clean, well laid out and roomy, with Sky TV available to those who are tired of looking at the greenery outside the front window. It is an excellent base for walking or touring the whole of Perthshire and beyond, lochs, forests, open country, the east coast, oh and lochs, did I mention those. Not that one feels much like leaving the valley itself and the welcome of the house, the village and Strathardle.
