The Surroundings of Rome and Lazio Region:
Still undiscovered region of fascinating nature, Lazio has a mild climate thanks to the influence of the Mediterranean Sea, with an extraordinary variety of landscape, rich in artistic monuments: At Tarquinia, Cerveteri and Tuscania, necropolises and museums bear evidence of ancient and mysterious Etruscan people (seventh to sixth centuries B.C.) who ruled central Italy before the rise of Rome. There are countless testimonies of the Roman and later historical eras outside Rome, in the other provinces of Latium and in the local centres: The medieval Viterbo ((city of the Popes) and la Tuscia area, Frosinone with Abbey of Montecassino and Sermoneta.
Villa Adriana in Tivoli (where the renaissance Villa d'Este can also be found), the seventeenth-century Palazzo Barberini in Palestrina, and the Cathedral in Anagni. Just outside Rome don't forget the escavation of Ostia Antica with the ancient port of Rome.
Bracciano and the Lake:
The town of Bracciano counts 17.000 inhabitants, is about 900 feet (280 meters) above sea level, in a delightful location, with its historical medieval centre and the majestic Orsini-Odescalchi Castle (just above the cottage), which is privately owned, but open to the public for guided tours.
At 1 km from the Cottage you can visit the Botanical Gardens of S. Liberato (designed by Russel Page), where you can also admire the oldest frescoes in the small ancient church.
We can also recommend a boat trip on the lake, with stops by the villages of Anguillara and Trevignano, a visit to the Aeronautical Air Craft Museum by the lake, the most important in Europe. The lake offers: Swimming, sailing, fishing, canoeing, pedalò, rent a boat with electric motor, windsurf, sunbathing, restaurants and bars.
