Varenna is home to Italy's shortest river, the Fiumelatte. Only 250 meters long, it rushes, frothy and milky-white (hence the name) down the rockface and crashes into the lake. From the end of March to the end of October each year. And then it stops - just like that. Leonardo da Vinci climbed down to find out where the water came from. But neither he, nor anyone else, has ever been able to work it out. Varenna is one of the most picturesque towns on the lake, its steep winding alleys lined with charming homes, flowering balconies and lace-curtained windows. Just above it is the ancient castle where Theodolinda, Queen of the Lombards, is said to have died in the 7th century. Two famed villas to visit here are Villa Cipressi, with terraced gardens cascading right down to the shores, and Villa Monastero, a true showcase. Skiing in the area is bountiful; resorts such as Madesimo, only 1.15 hr north of Colico and the local ski resort of Piani di Bobbio, only 40 mins away.

Lake Como: The Lake of Como is among the Alps-seas.With a length of 55 km and a low of 410 m is the lake belongs to the deepest in Europe. A luxuriant vegetation prevails on the basis of the mild climate here.The lake splits in the middle of a reverse Y, at whose both ends the biggest cities Lecco and Como lie. This area is not only known for its fabulous landscape around the Lake Como, but also for its industries, especially for the silk industry, which covers large parts of the global production.

Surrounding -Trips: Take the time to visit the beautiful historic buildings and botanical gardens around Lake Como - such as Villa Carlotta, extremely photogenic, featuring romantic statuary and lush gardens; Villa Ballbianello, a film location recently seen in Casino Royale, the latest James Bond movie. Italian National Trust property since 1988, the villa hosts a great collection of art, antique furniture & carpets. The gardens are also delightful and are open to visitors. The Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi - both have beautiful gardens that are open to the public between April - October. In Bellagio you can be taken on guided tours around Villa Serbelloni, a property owned by the Rockefella Foundation since 1959. The lakes of Como & Lugano offer the most scenic spots in all of Italy. Ferries carry passengers across there shimmering waters from town to town one of the main attractions of visiting the Lake.

When we arrived in Milan, the two apartments we had reserved fell through.
We had to spend several days in hotels until we could sort out an appropriate reservation. As I was on leave from work in Iraq, I was concerned about leaving my wife and children so far away from Milan. As they are beginning one year of study abroad in Italy, getting a foothold was critical.

Happy Holiday Homes was a life saver.

Not only did you welcome us to Varenna, but you took care of our every need with class and professionalism. When I visited the office, I was treated not like a client, but a friend. It is truly a pleasure to find people who embody the best in customer service. The home was lovely. While we had the opportunity to meet the owners, please convey our gratitude for wonderful accommodations. Well done! I look forward to coming back in the months and years ahead.
