Stone Cottage in the Tramontana Hills

Beautiful cottage in Fornalutx "pronounced Fornalootch" not in Soller “as in the ad” ‘pronounced Sawyer". A very good base for an excellent holiday. Very innovative architectural design built on the mountains olive groves terraces. The views are superb. The charming towns of Soller and Port Soller and the nearby village of Fornalutx all worth a visit. You can actually see Port Soller from the Mirador Del Bosq next door, which has a very good restaurant. The beach at Port Soller is clean white sand and very calm. A good selection of bars and restaurants available for a nice evening meal on the harbour of Port Soller. Beautiful Deia and Valldemossa are not very far. We have not used the tram between Soller and its Port but came across it few times. It looks so rustic and welcoming.
A good car is essential since the drive up the mountains is quite steep at places. But it worth every second of driving, just for the breath taking views. Other than the towns mentioned above, and for almost all other attractions and towns e.g. Airport, Palma, Jardin de Alfabia, Palma beach, Aqualand, Alcudia/ beach etc. you have to drive out of Fornalutx and Soller, via the Soller tunnel. It cuts 6 km out of the trip and save you 30 minutes when compared to the hair-rising very steep mountain track. But you have to pay 4.75 Euro at the toll every time – August 2009 (one day we paid almost 24 Euro, since we have to go and drop someone at Palma early morning + three other trips! Be prepared! The only real downer of our holiday is the insect bites. There is a big variety of insects, flying and crawling, and their bites are nasty, despite the hardwork of adorable half a dozen or so of Mallorcan geko lizards. I recommend you buy strong insect repellent and use mosquito nets for the kids (2 provided by the owner) from Day1. We've done that on the 3rd day and lived to regret and tell the tale. You are sharing their mountain forest home, so please take your precautions and keep them at bay from the 1st night.
Catalina was friendly and helpful.
We definitely return there, especially if fans or air-conditioning is provided (to get rid of insects). Otherwise we will use repellants from Day1.
