Initally the owners were exceptionally helpful, understanding people prior to arrival.
Its a 10 minutes walk to the car park, which was a pain when raining, as it invariable does in the UK. Bringing the car to the front of the property was a nightmare in high season as the streets are packed with tourists who don't move quickly for a car, we opened the front door to a van for the first three days which was a squeeze to get past.
We were shocked at how close the nearest pub was, opposite front door to front door was 4 metres this meant in an evening its exceptionally noisy it did ease at midnight but because the windows were so old you could hear conversations word for word.
The property was clean and unusually they provided cleaning products and things like bubble bath and washing up liquid, which was a nice touch. Although it was strange the beautiful Sunflowers were on the table in a plastic measuring jug??!!
Windows in the property were a big problem, they were broken and unable to lock, this meant our 6 year old could opened them easily luckily I caught her before she took a 3rd floor tumble. I wouldn't advise leaving a child on their own in a second or third floor room.
Wall paper was hanging off, holes in floor and none of the chairs in the living room had flame retardent labels on, a requirement by law. We also couldn't see when the electric points had been PAT tested. The windows were wedged open in the toilet and bathroom by chocks of wood, letting eve more pub noise into the property
The beds in the property were in our opinion exceptionally uncomfortable with springs protruding. We didn't find the bed in the main bedroom very big so emailed to owner for some extra bedding so we could sleep in different beds - we did receive a response however the bedding never arrived, so we went and bought our own.
After a couple of days into the holiday and these issues descibed becoming apparent we decided to leave the property early, the property wasn't at all comfortable and it was too much of a risk for us the stay in it any longer. We emailed the owner to advise of this. The owner has not been in touch with us since emailing our issues with the property.
To summon up the property is overpriced for the quality it is shoddy, you will find something that sleeps as many for a similar price which is upto a much higher standard and with a better customer service.
Owner's Response: It's true there was some damage to the property following the previous week's guests and this was all repaired immediately we discovered it and before the next guests moved in. None of the damage was serious and was quite easily repaired.
Sometimes cars and vans do park outside, but as it's a restricted area for parking, they are usually gone within minutes. Besides, you can always use the back door which leads onto a very quiet street indeed. We simply don't believe a van was parked there for 3 days - it would have been towed away long before 3 days was up! Not many cottages in central Looe have the benefit of a place to stop immediately outside and unload, but of course others do use the space from time to time!
Sure, the cottage is in the centre of town which makes it very close to the beach, harbour, shops and pubs. If you're looking for a quiet remote location then Foam Cottage is probably the wrong place!
We're puzzled by the comments about the beds and chairs. All previous comments about the beds have been on the lines of how comfortable they are. After these guests complained we conducted a small experiment. Knowing which bed they had slept in, we have made up both this bed and the other double bed in the cottage for all subsequent weeks. Every single subsequent couple has chosen to sleep in the bed that these guests had claimed was so uncomfortable! So we concluded that other guests did not share their view that the bed was uncomfortable!
There are no 'springs protruding'. And we can assure guests that all soft furnishings are fire resistant.
The comments that we didn't respond to their request for extra bedding or get in touch with the guests after they emailed their complaint are also untrue. After the request for more linen, we immediately made arrangements for the cleaner to visit the cottage the following morning. We called back to confirm this, but the guests had changed their mind and said 'don't bother, we'll buy our own'!
Then, despite the fact that we were away from home ourselves, we spoke on the phone pretty much every day and emailed at length within 24 hours of returning home and receiving their complaint! We never received a response and concluded it was a compensation try-on.
These guests explained that their last holiday had been in a luxury 7 bedroomed villa in Florida complete with king-sized beds and masses of space. It seems they were expecting the same sort of property in Cornwall. What can you say?
