Sheephaven Bay is situated on the Northern Coast of County Donegal facing the Atlantic. The Bay stretches from Carrigart in the East to Dunfanaghy in the west encompassing locations such as Downings, Rosapenna, Creeslough, Glen, Marble Hill and Port na Blagh. This area is rich in culture, tradition and outdoor activities, including Golfing, Walking, Diving, Surfing, Fishing, Cycling and Equestrian, all within a 30 mile radius. Donegal county is a magical place with some of Ireland's most barren, yet romantic, scenery. It is a must-visit for any tourist in Ireland with an exceptional landscape that include Europe's highest sea-cliffs; a national park that offers mesmerising drives, even in winter, and dozens of deserted white sandy beaches, 12 of them Blue Flag. Despite its apparent isolation from the rest of the country, this county, like Cork, is a bit of a rebel kingdom with a pride of place and strong sense of culture and heritage not to mention cosy pubs and seafood.

Carrigart is located on the north coast of Donegal on the Rosguill peninsula between the inlets of Mulroy Bay and Sheephaven Bay. This lovely village is an ideal centre for exploring the magnificent scenery of the adjoining coast and is convenient to Glenveigh National Park. With a population just under 1,000 the village is one of the neatest in County Donegal and always fares well in the annual Tidy Towns competition. The newly renovated North Star Bar on the main street has a great reputation for food and live music. The Carrigart Hotel, located at the end of the main street, is a very popular family hotel and has a superb restaurant . Downings itself has a gym and for the family an indoor swimming pool and soft play area for those not so perfect days. For the golf enthusiast, the links courses at Portsalon and Rosapenna are within easy reach.

A short drive will take you to the scenic Atlantic Drive, the enchanting Ards Forest Park and the wild unspoilt beauty of Donegal's Highlands, including two of Donegal's highest mountains - Muckish and Errigal. You also have the renowned Glenveigh National Park. Guests can enjoy a number of varied and exciting day trips including a boat trip to Tory Island and a visit to the ancient and historic city of Derry. The area is also renowned for its fishing, and three natural brown trout lakes can be found within easy reach as well as a wide variety of sea angling opportunities. A wide variety of walks - from an easy beach stroll to more challenging are also literally on your doorstep.

Golf: Golf at Rosapenna Donegal The Old Tom Morris Links has been attracting golfers for over a century and now, with the addition of the magnificent Sandy Hills Links, Rosapenna is set to become one of the top links destinations in the world. Both links courses provide a true seaside challenge for all levels of players. Visitors are always welcome on both courses. A little piece of Paradise

ladyanne & Sir Roddle Bury st Edmunds, Suffolk, England
Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We had a brilliant time. The house fitted our needs perfectly and wow what a view. After each day trip we spent the evening just watching the sunset. The area was a gem. This was our 1st visit to the area and there is so much to do and see. The house was clean tidy and very well fitted out with everything we needed and felt like home from home. The welcome pack was very thoughtful. We will definately return and to the same house.

Alton Aerach has all you need

Review Submitted: August 31, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
This cottage fits the bill and has everything you need from the moment you walk through the door. A welcome back of wine, crisps, tea, coffee, olive oil should cover anything you have forgot to bring and the kitchen has all the cooking aids you need, its full of pans, peelers, mashers, zesters etc you can cook up a feast, we did nearly every night. Dining table extends to take 4-8 people. The living room is also great, a large L shaped settee that fits 5 people, some smaller chairs for the kids, everything is hooked up to an amp so DVD's & music sound great and the built in ipod dock is handy to play your own music, although there is a great library of DVD's and music already there. The Conservatory is lovely and warm, 2x 2 seater's means there is plenty of room to chill and watch the sun go down over horn head, regardless of the weather. There are 4 large bedrooms, 1 with en-suite shower/toilet and extra beds so there is plenty of room to sleep the possee. The house was very clean when we got there which put the ladies at ease. We had 2 Labrador's & 2 miniature dachshunds with us which was no problem for the owners and they loved the front and back gardens, they were able to roam about as its pretty secure (and dead quiet anyway) there is a trail up the back of the house that can be used for walking the dogs but you will more than likely hit the local beaches. Chris has a handy google map drawn up which no doubt he will email but basically, there is a MASSIVE beach 5 mins drive at the golf course that we couldn't walk the length of, after 90 mins walk we had to turn and walk back, everyone knackered! Dunfanaghy has another amazing beach and the ones in ards forest park are beautiful & private. Downings has a family orientated beach about 1 min from the golf course beach. I truly believe that this area of donegal has more than enough to fill a week, and im going back next year to the same house, as to be honest, the view alone is amazing and unrivalled by houses closer to the shore. It will take your breath away as you turn into the drive of the house and park the car, you can see for miles! Dont forget to goto the Glen Bar for dinner some night too, only 5 mins from the house.

Carrigart with a view.

A delightful property which is as good as it claims. Magnificent location - but you need a car to go for the milk - and exceptional views. Very well equipped kitchen and generously provided with bits and pieces including good bikes. Even the occasional wet day is enjoyable viewed from the very pleasant conservatory. Great walks. Very comfortable beds but a second set of linen for week two would be a good idea. Watch the sloping ceilings!

First Irish Vacation

Blue Bell Family Blue Bell, PA, USA
Review Submitted: July 22, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
In June of 2009 I took my family on our first visit to Ireland and couldn't be more pleased with our overall experience. Our one week stay at Alton Aerach was the highlight of our trip. The house was great with stunning views of Sheephaven Bay and incredible sunsets. The accommodations were excellent. We were a short drive to golf courses, hiking, pubs, and numerous sightseeing locations which have to be seen to be fully appreciated. My kids climbed Muckish Mountain, we walked to the edge of Horn Head, played golf at Rosapenna Golf Course and had a few Guinness along the way. The owners of Alton Aerach could not have been more accommodating. If we have friends or relatives coming over, we will definitely recommend staying here. The privacy and solitude at this location were also an added bonus. We will be back.
Dennis G and Family

PS - Highly suggest renting a car to take advantage of all the sites this area of Ireland has to offer.
