A wonderful traditional stone house situated in a picturesque quiet lane surrounded by olive trees, yet in the heart of the village. Perfect for getting away from it all & feeling that you are in Crete amongst Cretans. The house has comfortable contemporary furnishings. It has a fully equipped kitchen, private bathroom for master bedroom & separate shower room for ground floor bedroom. The lounge is spacious and stylish. The house has extensive gardens & itself surrounded by olive groves. There is a secluded front garden with private parking, a pebbled olive tree/flower garden & a natural olive garden with uninterrupted views & an abundance of native birds (& wild flowers in spring). There's a magnificent 1st floor terrace-ideal for a lazy lunch /elegant dinner or soaking up the unspoiled atmosphere. The roof terrace has spectacular views of the valley,village & down to the sea. Don't miss the wonderful scene at night, when all the stars are out & the only sound is of the birds.

  • BED & BREAKFAST is offered on a room basis for 2 persons.. It includes the master bedroom, private bathroom with bath & shower + sole use of terraces. Additionally continental breakfast.& towels /linen is included . NB : A full English breakfast or more extensive breakfast menu if offered on request for a small extra cost. B&B is offered nightly at the following rates
    1st March to 31 March 2010 £35 (40€) & 1 April 2010 to 31 May 2010 £45 (50€) - All bookings must be paid in Advance.
    There are special rates for the Christmas & New Year period - please enquire
  • HOUSE RENTAL ( sole use of whole house /terraces/ gardens). Minimum 1 week stay. Booking reservations will be held once a deposit of £100 (115€) for every week is received. The remainder is required 2 months before arrival. Towels & linen are provided.
    Payment is accepted in Sterling & Euros by bank transfer. Please enquire for euro rate.
    Once a booking is made you will receive confirmation of it.

It also has a window with shutters & overlooks the surrounding countryside. The ground floor has a private shower room next to the ground floor bedroom. It is also modern with a traditional flair. A TRULY CRETAN HOLIDAY: Olive Lane Country House offers a truly different holiday. You are not stranded in a tourist resort, not totally isolated in the back of beyond, or just amongst other holiday villas, you are in a beautiful historical village still alive with a traditional culture - so hard to find these days. However you won't be stuck as most of the locals speak some English.There is a wonderful local taverna which is family run, frequented by locals & visitors alike. It serves delicious home-made food, has a good selection of wines/ beers, not to mention the complimentary dessert & Raki. Additionally it is unbelievably cheap. Alternatively there are picturesque Kafenion /tavernas that serve great souvlaki (bbq kebabs ) & Metzes. The local one is tucked away in the lane by a huge old tree. It has extended into an atmospheric old house (ruin).It has free wireless internet access & regular live Cretan music nights. (authentic music not put on for tourists). It's all here waiting for you..

TOTAL RELAXATION: The house itself is totally relaxing, it has extensive gardens not overlooked as well as terraces to unwind & soak up the peace & calm, surrounded only by nature. Additionally due to the wonderful climate of a long summer & then spring like winter, the gardens & terraces can be used all year round. If things get too hot, even in the shaded areas. then there is a spacious, comfortable lounge with dining table & sofa that looks out onto the garden & has AC (as well as central heating for those winter months if you feel the cold). Laze around the house & garden, sunbathing with a drink or two & take a stroll to experience some culture & wonderful food. If you feel a little energetic it's worthwhile making it to the local beach a few km's away. Here the bay is so picturesque with lovely cool clear water, beautiful sand & an array of restaurants & small bars. Freshly caught fish & seafood is a must. The evenings are a real chill outl with amazing views of the bay & magical sunsets

OUTBOUND ACTIVITIES: For those of you who like to get up & go, this destination is perfect. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. Gavalochori is in a valley surrounded by the white mountains. The surrounding hills have pine trees all around. It is famous for it's wild flowers & indigenous birds & butterflies. Walking is so rewarding, you do not have to be super fit although there are also more challenging walks, not forgetting the gorges in the area. Similarly for cyclists (& mountain bike riders), the countryside & villages makes for an enjoyable & memorable trip. Both activities have regular tours available in the area as well as offering bike hire. Horse riding is also offered a little further afield, local travel agents in Almirida have details. If you simply love the water then there is a sailing school in Almirida, that do all sorts of water activities with instructors. Alternatively for those less daring, Lake Kournas has pedalos for hire. There is so much to do..

Lovely house from which to explore the real Crete

We really enjoyed our stay and the owners made us very welcome. The house is in a lovely peaceful location in an authentic Cretan village, with friendly shops, tavernas and a bakery just a short walk away. Wifi is available at a nearby taverna, and the mobile signal was good at the house.

The house is very well equipped and we appreciated the personal touches that make it more than just a holiday home. We especially enjoyed the outside dining area, the upstairs balcony, and sunbathing on the roof terrace.

A car is needed if you want to explore. There are beaches nearby at Almyrida and Kalives and further afield is spectacular mountain scenery. We highly recommend a day trip to the Botanical Park on the road to the Samaria Gorge. The towns of Chania and Rethymno are within an hour's drive and are well worth a visit.

This tastefully decorated property delivers everything promised in the description - and more. The owners have thought of absolutely everything you could possibly want or need while you stay in this beautiful and secluded house. You have all the privacy in the world and yet very good quality restaurants are a few minutes' stroll away. You really do feel part of village life here. There are several beaches a short drive away and if you want to venture out there are historical sites and more beaches further afield and some incredible scenery. The chic city of Chania was easy to drive to and what a pleasure it was to return in the evening to sit on the roof and gaze at the stars. I would recommend this property to everyone but then I would be cross if I wanted to go there again and it was fully booked for the season, which it deserves to be.
