Set in 120 acres of lush green Wiltshire countryside, this spacious and comfortable equestrian homestead has an outdoor pool, horses, fishing at the lake and acres of space in which to ramble. You can simply relax and enjoy this country idyll or visit some of the many historic estates and family attractions close-by. The house was built in 1650 by the Earl of Cork, as the gardener’s house for the Marston Estate and is surrounded by wonderful views towards Cley Hill, Longleat and Stourhead. There are 4 acres of walled gardens surrounding the house, mostly laid to lawn and pasture and used by horses for grazing with a small orchard and free ranging chickens. Spring-water fills the pool, pond and lakes. There are 5 comfortable bedrooms and 4 luxurious bathrooms or ensuites all of which have lots of light, fresh air and great views. Throughout the house are lovely artworks of horses and dogs collected by the owner since childhood.

The other smaller double room has a large shared en-suite with travertine tiled spacious walk-in shower with multi-directional massage spray, large hand-basin and WC which it shares with a further double room. Next to this is a large chequered tiled travertine bathroom with bath, hand basin and WC.A separate utility and boot room on the ground floor has a washing machine and dryer with a further scrub room with a WC.

  • The Master bedroom is entered via a large and luxurious dressing room with lots of elegant fitted wardrobes, dressing table and sofa-bed with the option of use as bedroom if required. Continue into the bedroom which has a king-sized bed and further drawers and dressing table. There is a large travertine tiled en-suite. The next family room has a king-size and single pine bed with matching pine wardrobe, drawers, book-case and small TV with video. This room also has an en-suite shower room with WC and hand basin. Another smaller double room has a double bed and storage and is linked to a large shared en-suite. A further double room has a king-sized bed with wardrobe, dressing table and subtle oriental theme. Finally there is a twin room with beds that can zip together to become a super-king.

Notes: Enter the house through a smart drawing room with two vast sofas and a large leather chair set in front of a Bath stone fireplace. There is an African snug with another open fireplace, along with a squashy sofa, two armchairs, a hippo table and a large TV with sky, DVD and a big selection of movies, videos and board games. The convivial terracotta dining room has a big square table that will seat 12 to 16 and large oak sideboards filled with fine crystal, cutlery and large serving dishes. There is a cloakroom too on the ground floor. The large Kitchen has a traditional aga, (used in the cooler months) a double electric oven, a gas hob, a microwave and a large fridge with separate freezer. A separate utility and boot room has a washing machine and dryer with a further scrub room with a WC. Back in the kitchen, a round table seats 6. There is a bread maker and magi mix for your own freshly baked bread and scones and you’ll probably want to eat them warm on the terrace by the pool.

The Pool: The pool measures 10m x 5m with paved surround and 6 steamer chairs where you can soak up the sun and take in the lovely views of the surrounding parkland and Marston church. There is a shaded loggia on one side with running and rowing machines. On the raised terrace, there is a huge round table with parasol, to seat up to 16. Here too is a large gas BBQ and rotisserie and the owners can organise a hearty spit roast.

The Grounds: Bring outdoor clothing to make the most of your stay, there is much to enjoy on your doorstep. The owners can organise hacks for competent riders on hunters and dressage horses. There is also ‘Trail‘ Hunting where you ride out for the day, horses and hard hats provided. Alternatively a local riding stables will organise a trek for all the family. (Call Chris Payne mob 07976702931) From November to January you can go on a duck and pheasant shoot and return with a brace or alternatively a clay pigeon shoot. The owners can organise carp fishing on the privately owned Marston Lake or there is good fishing on a number of nearby rivers with tackle, bait and coaching. Apply online for a rod license - please ask us for the address. You can spend hours exploring the ancient parkland and woods and the owners have a large collection of books and local OS maps with many walks.
