Photos and Description of this Domme holiday castle Listed Historical Monument on 10 acres with pool and private forest, sleeps 14.

Sitting high on a hilltop between the villages of Domme and Castelnaud, Chateau Peyruzel is a 13th century Medieval Chateau and officially-listed Historical Monument. Carved from the bedrock of the hill in the Middle Ages to loom high as a fortress to hiding princes and clashing armies, this magnificently-restored Chateau, with a listed history from 1281, stands on 10 sprawling acres, guarding over the pristine valley below. With stunning views from every window of its four towers, this magnificent mansion has 5 bedrooms and many beautifully designed public rooms - offering all modern luxuries within its ancient stone layers. With antiques and impeccable decor, along with a magnificent spiral stone staircase that rises 5 stories, Chateau Peyruzel is the ideal getaway for up to 5 couples, or a family celebrating an important event. Weddings and anniversaries are perfectly located here in the unparalleled medieval walled garden, or the stone barn, and your guests will thank you forever

Chateau Peyruzel is a historical monument which sits high above the valley of the Ceou - a tributary of the Dordogne. Just a few kilometers from Castelnaud and Beynac to the northwest, and Domme and Sarlat to the northeast, it surveys the valley with a 320 degree view from Domme to Gramat. Only 1hr 15 mins to Bergerac Airport, or 2 hours drive from Toulouse, 2.5 hrs from Bordeaux, 7 hours from Paris, and 15 minutes from Gourdon (with a train service from Paris), it's easily reachable by plane, train and car. In the heart of the Perigord Noir, the chateau is within easy reach of the famous caves in Montignac & Les Eyzies (25 mins), the ancient villages of Domme (5 mins), famous chateaux of Castelnaud (5mins), Beynac (10 mins), and the town of Sarlat (15 mins) with its medieval buildings and famous market. Amazing gardens of Marquessac and Eyrignac are also close-by. But most importantly, the chateau is a historical destination in itself as it's featured in many guide books.

Notes: There is a large, spiral, stone staircase that ascends 5 floors. For this reason, children under 8 would need to be supervised due to the nature of the stairs which only have a rope, and no bannister. The house is also filled with antiques and luxury furnishings, and it would be the responsibility of the parents to monitor their young children. Due to the nature of this being a historical monument and having 4 floors, we guard against children younger than 8. However, it is up to the parents to make this judgment. Small babies (pre-walking) are obviously not an issue and we provide door gates and cots for these young guests. Bicycles are availabe for rental from a company that delivers and picks up the bicycles at no charge. They have all kinds of bicycles for all ages and these can be reserved and delivered ahead for you use.

Our Fabulous Stay at Chateau Payruzel in July 2009

Sopwitt Santa Rosa CA, USA
Review Submitted: August 24, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
When I and my husband drove thru the gates of Chateau Peyruzel and entered its grounds, it took my breath away. It was truly my dream of a French country chateau experience come true. Our family and friends that joined us were very happy that we'd found the perfect destination for our multi-generation get-together.

Outside: Originally built as a fortress in the 13th century, its stunning hilltop site is striking both as one approaches from the valley below, and once there, as one gazes out from the manicured grounds to the charming village of Daglan, the hills, and bucolic farmlands, not to mention the exquis ite sunsets. The pool, although recently added, was stunning in that it fits so seamlessly into the extensive grounds and the covered pool house was the best spot to linger at the end of the day with a glass of wine.

Inside; The owners have lovingly restored, appointed, and furnished the interior with exquisite taste and French style. There is no doubt what country you are in, and its beauty. Looking at the photos on the website, as impressive as they are, they do not do justice to the look and feel that one actually experiences20within those walls. In addition, on arrival, everything was pristine and wonderfully clean and perfectly prepared. We were happy to sink into the beautiful beds after our long trip!

The owners prepared us with everything we could possibly have needed before we arrived: maps, directions, what we needed to bring, where we could shop and what was within easy reach. Once in the chateau, there was further information about local sites and very personal directions for everything we were interested in seeing: chateaux, wineries, beautiful gardens. Janice (the owner) also arranged for a meal cooked in the chateau by a local chef (our favorite meal), as well as making reservations for us in other local restaurants. Her local knowledge and personal attention provided us with a completely different experience than if we had been tourists.

I would recommend this “dream come true” Chateau without reservation, and hope to return there myself for another unbelievable escape into paradise. Imagine being inside a medieval castle, but with all the comforts and finest amenities of our 21st century. Magnifique!

It is an ideal, elegant site for family reunions, for an adventure with friends, or perhaps an anniversary or wedding.

It is a place I will never forget.

A Magical Holiday

Munsie South Africa
Review Submitted: August 16, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Staying at the Chateau this summer was a truly magical experience. It was indeed a privilege to spend such a wonderful few weeks in such a magnificent home and such spectacular surroundings. The chateau exceeded all our expectations and we will definitely be back as it was perfect for all our family and friends with their different demands - everyone was thrilled - from those for whom beautiful linen and tasteful decor was essential to those who were looking for lazy days at the pool and those among us who wanted to get out and discover the countryside - the chateau was perfectly positioned and really had it all. I particularly loved the experience of staying in an authentic chateau which was so beautifully appointed that the wow factor seemed to renew itself every day. The views from the windows, the magnificent stone staircase, the luxurious bedrooms and sitting rooms - what a fabulous experience. The owners have managed to strike a rare balance of an exceptionally high standard while allowing you also to feel very much at home - so much so that we never wanted to leave. Endless summer evenings outdoors - dinner en plein air most nights - superbe! Thank you.

Dream holiday at the Chateau

Juz H London, United Kingdom
Review Submitted: August 11, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
The Dordogne is by far my favourite area in Southwest France. The land surrounding the chateau is naturally exquisite with rich farmland and rolling hills. There is lots to do and see in the area. Kayaking down the Dordogne was a highlight, as was eating at the many world class restaurants in the different villages. I spent my summer vacation at the breathtaking chateau in Domme. It is beautifully decorated with fantastic furniture, artwork and stunning curtains. The beds are particularly comfortable all lined with crisp French linen. The large dining room is perfect for entertaining friends and family over dinner. The mornings are best spent eating croissants and drinking coffee overlooking the beautiful medieval garden. The pool house is made of stone and is covered from the warm sun. The afternoons are best spent relaxing on the sun loungers and reading by the large exquisite pool. The chateau is equipped with everything you may possibly need during your stay. In the evening, the pool house provides an excellent viewpoint to watch the sunset whilst enjoying some of the finest wine from the nearby vineyards. The owners provide excellent planning, directions and information needed to fully explore the area. The photographs on the website provide only a snapshot of the property's beauty!

Impressions of my stay at the Chateau

Marcial San Francisco, California USA
Review Submitted: July 31, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
This is a region that we fell in love with 20 years ago. The food, history, and beauty are all draws. Also, the people are warm and friendly. Not grouchy as in the more bustling parts of tourist France. You can't dupicate the experience of a guided tour of ancient cave paintings by a young french doctoral student who moved us (and herself) to tears by her passion for the history of the region.
This chateau is in the best part of the Dordogne for touring and what a wonderful house it is! It is hard to describe how a house can be awestriking and comfortable at the same time. Had a wonderful week with friends where we toured, cooked, and celebrated. We ranged from family dinners where we cooked and ate in the breakfast room, days at lounging by the pool, to a party with 25 people. The layout works (somehow) for any size group. My favorite part is the ancient stone staircase that takes up a full 1/4th of the chateau as you make your way from bedrooms to sitting rooms to the terrace. Also the fireplaces that are so large you can stand in them. You can really see how this chateau was used over the centuries.
The owners clearly have thought out how to maintain what is precious, but bring it forward to what you now need to live. The beds are great. Lots of bathrooms (a french rarity) and a well appointed kitchen. Modern pool and pool house with views everywhere. Also, Janice, one of the owners helped arrange experiences you wouldn't think of doing, such as visiting truffle market or where are the best antique shops in the region. Then there is wine....
With such a large house there is a lot of furniture. There is a great mix of period antiques and comfy chairs and sofas. Find a quiet place to read or throw a cocktail party in the salon. Got to mention the custom curtains in every room. This is a study on how curtains add movement and life to a house. Lots of precious antique fabric and high end draping. Fun to look at and greet each different set as you make your way from room to room.
I highly recommend this chateau!
