Chamonix is the hub of this world famous ski and alpine area, situated in the north west of the Alps 15km from both the Italian and Swiss borders. Mont Blanc (4808m)and its chain of peaks dominate the valley. Chamonix is probably best known as the skiing and alpine capital of the world. As a destination it has a reputation for the extreme and this, whilst undoubtedly true, can mask a wide array of other sporting and leisure activities that can be enjoyed here. A mecca for mountaineers, you can also walk the hundreds of miles of beautiful footpaths, try mountain biking, paragliding, play golf or just enjoy peace and quiet in a beautiful place. Chamonix town has a cosmopolitan feel and a vast selection of restaurants and shops. The town is at the foot of Mont-Blanc and following introduction of skiing in the early 20th century Chamonix hosted the first winter Olympic Games in 1924.
