The climate is generally mild and sunny and It is also famous as a home for many years to the late actor, David Niven who recounts his adventures on skis in his autobiography ' The Moon's a Balloon '.In January each year, Chateau D'Oex plays hosts to Europe premier hot air balloon festival,a magical vision of imagination and colour ! The resort is also famous for it's Etivaz cheese, created in the valley for many centuries and still made there by 70 families using traditional methods ( log fires and big copper cauldrons ) each summer.There is a local cheese museum and in summer a 'Cheese trial '. Lake Geneva are easily reached as are Chillion and Aigle castles and the medieval village and Chateau of Gruyere with its famous cheese is close by.Broc, the Cailler chocolate factory is only 30 minutes drive.

In the summer,the wonderful countryside offers a spectacular setting for hiking,cycling, tennis,archery, indoor bowling and horse riding. At near by Gstaad, home to many of the world's rich and famous, the Swiss Open Tennis is held in July which local favourite and world number 1,Roger Federer has won for the last couple of years. Gstaad also hosts the Catier Polo Championships each summer.You can also readily zip down to Montreux in well under an hour ( where the late Freddy Mecury, The Queen ) had a statue by the lake or to enjoy its world famous Jazz Festival. Skiers and snowboarders of all abilities can enjoy some 250 km of excellent downhill slopes.The Pays-d'Enhaut has an extensive net-work of cross-country skiing to offer too with 35 km of well kept classic or skating pistes criss-cross the patures and forests of La Lecherette's sunny plateau, or perhaps may just prefer a quiet and romantic outing in a horse drawn sleigh through the snow covered landscape.
