Nordic walking:
Nordic walking is popular and healthy. More and more people practice this moving concept for staying in shape. Nordic walking – the new top sport – is now being established in Bingen, too. Fitness and health have a growing part in tourism. The town of Bingen supports this by establishing a Nordic walking park. It offers diversified routes in a lovely landscape. At the Rochusberg-routes (400 m behind the Villa Kappes) you can walk through meadows, forrest and vineyards, along with fantastic views of the Rhine valley and Rhine Hesse. The routes in the Binger forest lead amongst others along an adventure path and grant lots of fresh and healthy air.
Excursions:
Bingen is an ideal origin for excursions to all directions. In the perimeter of a one hour driver there is a vast amount of destinations that can easily be reached by tram, too. In the Northwest lies the romantic Rhine Valley , the Valley of Loreley. Castles, palaces and museums along the river, up to Koblenz at the confluence of Rhine and Moselle, attract tourists constantly. Very close in the south Worms, Speyer and the Palatinate are situated. In the East there are Mainz, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, in the West the spring fountains Bad Kreuznach, Bad Münster, St.-Ebernburg and Bad Sobernheim as well as the ivory town Idar-Oberstein. Diversified landscapes open up all around town. Rhine Hessia, the Hunsrück between Nahe and Moselle and the Rheingau on the right to the Rhine – all of these make multifaceted destinations.
The valley of Loreley:
At the same side of the Rhein as Bingen, down the river, ist the castle Rheinstein, one of the most beautiful castles at the Rhein. Built in 1990/1991 and fully renovated, the annex served as stronghold for the archbishops of Mainz in the 14th century. Only a few kilometres further one can find the castle Reichenstein, built before 1215 and therefore one of the oldest stronghold at the Rhine. The castle museum includes Rheinland-Pfalz’ largest stove plate collection as well as 1200 hunt trophies from 4 continents. On the right side of the Rhine, directly across from Bingen there is the ruin Ehrenfels, former duty castle of the archbishops of Mainz and in the medieval times depository of the Dom treasure of Mainz. One of the most beautiful excursions starting from Bingen leads to the Loreley. The cliff of 132 m that sticks out steeply of the Rhine at St. Goarshausen should be discovered by ship.
