Where we are: The property is close to the major of attractions of Provence in the Southern Cotes de Rhone region. Orange 15 minutes, Vaison la Romaine 15 minutes. L'Isle sur Sorgue 25 mins, Avignon (train station) 30 mins, Nimes 45 mins, St Remy de Provence 45 min, Marseille (airport) 85 mins
The village: Cairanne is situated between Orange and Vaison la Romaine. It has two distinct parts. On the top of the hill is 'le vieux village' (pop 80) where the house is situated while the more modern village (pop 850) is down the hill - a five minute stroll from the house. The 'new' village has an attractive square, a bakery, a tabac, a grocery store, a wine bar and a cafe. The houses in the old village date mostly from the 18th century but the ramparts date back to the 12th century when the Knights of Templar inhabited the area.
The area: The region has many cultural attractions from the famous summer festivals at Avignon, Vaison la Romaine, Orange and Aix en Provence as well as the gypsy festivals and bullfights at Nimes and Arles. And there are many, charming local events : all the local villages have an annual 'Fete de vins', there are summer concerts in some of the vineyards, a writers festival, Jazz in the vineyards and a choir festival. Although close to some major towns (and their wonderful markets) Cairanne is in deep country and close to some wonderful walks either flat in the vineyards or hilly in the nearby Dentelles de Montmirail or Mont Ventoux.
