Plymouth is a City steeped in a vast and rich history, and has been shaped by the events of the past.It has been the home to Colonial Adventurers, is the place where the Pilgrim Fathers departed from, and due to its naval heritage, was a primary target for bombers during the Second World War.
In the 1086 Doomsday book, the area was recorded as “sudtone” (south farm), and over the years the farmland evolved into a fishing port around Sutton Harbour.The area was officially granted town status in 1254 and trade flourished.
Although there are no beaches in Plymouth, there are many spectacular beaches within a short drive of the City.
