Casa Vistosa is a charming traditional cottage with shuttered windows nestling on a hillside above the Lima valley and set in a large terraced garden containing many orange and tangerine trees--great for juice making! It stands on a rough track 0.8K from civilization! The cottage is ideal for those wanting a 'no frills' getaway.A DVD/CD player provides film and music entertainment and there is a range of English books.There is a Portuguese TV. The country kitchen has a log burning range which is great for heating the house in the cool season. The shower bathroom is situated downstairs. The 2 bedrooms are large with 5 single beds which can be rearranged to form doubles. A cot can be provided. The main area of relaxation is the fabulous covered terrace which has stunning views of the Lima river. I think most of your time will be spent here cooking on the 'churrasqueira' with a glass of local vinho verde admiring the panorama in front of you.

Although secluded the cottage is only 4K from beautiful,historic Ponte de Lima with its long stone bridge built originally by Romans.The oldest town in Portugal it has many restaurants and quaint local shops in the narrow cobbled alleyways.Steeped in tradition and culture it holds the Vaca das Cordas festival in June and the Feiras Novas in September.Across the bridge are the Thematic gardens and Rural Museum,the International Garden Festival held from June to October,the fine municipal pool and Clube Nautico where canoes and cycles can be hired.The eco-via stretches along the river from Lanheses to Ponte de Barca and around the protected area of Lagoas.There is also a challenging 18-hole golf course.The area is a historical treat with Guimaraes,a World Heritage site,Braga,Viana do Castelo and Porto being very accessible.Nature lovers must not miss the National Park nor surfers the fabulous sandy Atlantic beaches.In fact there is something for everyone here.

This is an area steeped in local traditions and culture unlike the Algarve as the British are just beginning to discover. The fortnightly market in Ponte de Lima is held on the river beach and is not to be missed. The town supports all the required services and has a wide choice of restaurants and bars. An eco-via runs alongside the river from Lanheses to Ponte de Barca and for 22K around the protected Lagoas wildlife wetlands. It is appreciated by cyclists and walkers. The area is a delight to explore. Take a ferry from Caminha to Spain or travel into the wilds of the National Park to the east. Take a day cruise up the Douro from Porto or visit the port houses. Guimaraes was the first capital of Portugal and has a palace and castle and a mediaeval town centre. Nearer to home there are numerous shows and events held at Expolima only 2K away. The World Horseball championships are well worth a visit.It is a popular centre for equestrian events.

Golf: The local golf club in Ponte de Lima is 5k from the house.It is a challenging 18-hole course,hilly and wooded. There are 2 more clubs 35 to 45 minutes drive down the A28 coastal road.The first is at Esposende at the Quinta da Barca holiday resort complex.It has 9 holes. The other has hosted the Portuguese Open championship.It is an 18-hole links style course at Estrela. More courses are planned for North Portugal .
