Photos and Description of this Villefranche-sur-Mer holiday apartment
1 Bedrm, sleeping mezzanine, 1 bath apartment, fantastic seaside balcony & views

This waterfront apartment has been beautifully renovated and decorated, in a great old town location, in one of Villefranche's most historic buildings. The views are captivating - intimate yet panoramic, from the beach and cliffs at one end of the bay, to the entrance of the bay at the other end. Our guests say it is hard to leave the apartment as the views are captivating–summer or winter, day or night, between the beauty of the scenery as well as the boat scene on the bay one has constant entertainment. Both intimate and private, yet in the midst of it all. At night you hear the waves gently lapping the shore & the trickle of the lion fountain in the plaza below the bedroom window. Steps from the front door you have everything: shops, train station, beach, restaurants, great walks and more. If you are attending the Institute Francais, it is a short and beautiful walk to this world renowned French language school. A beautiful, romantic getaway. A great old town living experience.

Located on the waterfront, in the best part of the old town, at the end of one of the main pedestrian streets, where it is all residential, yet incredibly convenient to everything. Restaurants are about a 30 meter walk away, the beach about 50 - 100 meters (depending on where you go), and the shops start at about 30 meters away as well. This is a very residential area filled with many lovely Villefranchoise families. You will get a truly 'old town French' experience. The apartment is located on the 5th floor from sea level. But you enter the building on the 3rd floor so it is just one flight of stairs to the front door, and a second inside the apartment. The balconies are on the sea front and are very private and romantic. You do not need a car. However, if you want a car, parking is available close by. Public transport is superb and also close by. If you are attending the superb French language Institute, Institut Francais, it is a lovely 10-15 mins. walk from the apartment.

Notes: We welcome children but it is not that safe for young children. Either infants or children over the age of 5 or 6 that are fairly calm. The safety issues have to do with the balcony (i.e. if they climbed up on a chair they could go over the balcony railing and it is 5 stories down!), and the stairwell to the mezzanine has open rises to the stairwell below which is made of slate stairs - so very hard. There is no AC however we do provide fans. We find that only a couple of weeks of the summer do you even need the fans as there is always a light sea breeze the rest of the time. Generally night time temperatures cool down a bit and the big thick stone walls also provide some protection from the heat. The balcony furniture includes a dining table where you can sit 2 very comfortably and can squeeze 4. You can do 3 fairly easily. There are two dining chairs, two lounging chaises and 2 stools to add to the table. The dining table inside can seat 4.

Further details for this holiday apartment rental in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France

About Villefranche:

Great beach, fabulous swimming, great walks, exquisite scenery, wonderful restaurants, and lots to explore in our little triangle of beauty (Villefranche, Beaulieu, Cap Ferrat). Take a walk around the old town, around the water's edge walk of the citadel to the Port de la Darse, where boats have and continue to be built for over 500 years. Walk up to the Moyenne Corniche and follow the path up to Mont Boron to Fort Alban and come down the hillside back into Villefranche. Or take one of the prettiest walks in the world, from your doorstep in Villefranche, around the water's edge of Cap Ferrat -- a great day trip with a picnic and swim along the way. Or enjoy the SANDY beach of Villefranche and the wonderful swimming, or linger over a great lunch in one of the seaside restaurants or beach restaurants with a bottle of chilled rose wine. Or walk to Villa Keryolos or Villa Rothschild and take in these exquisite beauties. There is so much to do in our little triangle.

Things to do in the area:

But should you get bored with our little triangle, you can hop the train and head to Cannes or Antibes or take the bus to Nice. Cannes is great for shopping, as is Nice. Antibes is great to explore, have lunch, tour the marina and look at all the amazing yachts. Or take the train or bus to Monaco or Menton -- both fabulous in different ways. In Monaco, we love the Oceanographic Institute, exploring the old town, visiting the castle, exploring the Exotic garden and it's incredible grotto (a must for kids -- but adults will also have fun), the casino area and its gardens, the gorgeous Japanese garden and just 'hanging out' in Monaco -- it's such a scene! And then there is lovely Menton -- a fabulous old town, a lovely seaside. And then of course there is old Nice, the Promenade des Anglais and the several days you could spend exploring there. And we haven't even touched on St. Paul de Vence, Grasse, Vence, Eze or some of the other fabulous places within 30 min or less of here.

And there is more.....:

If you like to golf, there are some great golf courses in Monaco (unbelievable view over the Med) or Mougins, Cannes, and around. There is scuba diving, sailing, cycling (Lance Armstrong has called this place home -- still hangs out here), and great great walking. St. Tropez, the Var, Gorges du Verdon, Vallee du Roya, Italy, Corsica, Provence -- it is all close by yet you will always love coming back to Villefranche from wherever you visit because it is calm, embracing, nourishing -- a village with a great lifestyle.

This is a very kid friendly place but also a great place to be if you are a romantic couple just wanting to hang out or a retired couple wanting to experience living here for a while. Even as an expatriate you can integrate here quickly as there are a lot of expats here. And the French also enjoy mingling with the expat community.

CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN . . . . .

Review Submitted: June 28, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
At my 21st birthday party (40 odd years ago!) I gave a long speech thanking my parents, friends, relatives etc who then turned to my twin-sister for her 'speech' and all she could say was 'There's not much more to say!'
Having read all the fantastic revues about this wonderful apartment I am left with the same opinion - there's not much more to say! - other than affirm that this is indeed a most wonderful apartment - the views of Villefranche bay are truly delightful, and boat watching from the balcony truly fantastic! The interior is full of lovely eclectic furnishings -of fabulous art work on the walls, stunning lighting as well as great practical faciities - all completely accurate regarding the information about the apartment.

Shelley, the owner, provided us with much useful information before we arrived and met us on arrival - her energy, enthusiasm, hospitality and help with bags and taxi to Nice airport on departure were very much appreciated - and beautiful fresh flowers and bottle of wine in the fridge were welcoming touches. She is truly a beautiful person.

The apartment is very nicely positioned to pop out for fresh croissants for breakfast from a super boulangerie two minutes down the street along with an English paper arriving from 8.30 am! We also enjoyed being able to watch BBC/ITV channels and have access to the internet.

As also has been mentioned in reviews it is very easy to access places either by train or bus - both very convenient. Catch the bus to Nice and spend a night at the stunning Opera House - or catch the train to Eze and discover the wonderful restaurant on the beach - Papaya Beach.

We have been to the French Riviera many times over the years so we were quite content to explore Villefranche - delicious restaurants, lovely walks to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the beautiful gardens at Villa Rothschild and Villa Kerylos - you don't need a car!

Can't wait to return . . .

Wonderfully relaxing holiday

Review Submitted: March 14, 2011 Date of Stay: March 2011
We returned to the Waterfront Penthouse for the second time and plan to come again. The view from the terrace across the bay is so beautiful it is hard to believe you are part of it. Because the apartment is in the medieval part of town, where cars are not allowed, it is extremely quiet, except for the sound of the sea. The apartment is not overlooked and feels very private, and Shelley has created a warm, harmonious atmosphere with her choice of interior furnishings. She has lots of good advice about things to do and provided excellent customer service. After the crowds and bustle of London, it is enormously relaxing to visit such a charming place, out of season, where the footpaths are deserted, there are tables available in good restaurants, and people in the shops and markets are friendly and welcoming. We bought swordfish steaks from the fishermen on the quay, and barbecued them on our little terrace. They tasted fabulous. We ate twice at L'Oursin Bleu, which we remembered from our first visit, and the food was terrific. Most of all we enjoyed the peace and calm of a historic and charming French town.

Breathtaking views, great attention to details.

Review Submitted: October 28, 2010 Date of Stay: October 2010
The apartment is outfitted beautifully. Wonderful knives, cookware, dishes. all the extras we could imagine. Lots of storage, comfortable beds, lovely linens, comfortable, comfortable, comfortable. And then of course the balcony and the views. Stunning and always fascinating. I was able to watch my brother walk down the street to the beach and take his swim, watch the beach scene, the harbor scene, the tourist scene. The lights on the shimmering harbor at night and along the Corniches are a sight we will never forget.
But it was owner Shelley's enthusiasm for the town and the region and her recommendations that were so helpful and spot on. Her tips for traversing the town and visiting the sights and services there made it easy to settle in and explore. The Citadel is a must as well as Port Darse. A trip to Nice should include the astounding market and lunch with Nadim in his restaurant Oliviera - one of the highlights of the trip. In Villefranche, La Grignotiere became "our" restaurant, particularly because of the delightful Brigitte and her charming co-worker. A week was not enough. There is so much to explore and a wonderful home to return to each night.

It will blow you away . . .

Review Submitted: June 18, 2010 Date of Stay: May 2010
The waterfront penthouse is simply breathtaking. I can't imagine a better way to introduce my kids (ages 13 and 9) -- or any kids -- to the French Riviera. Before arriving we were not sure whether there would be enough "wiggle room" for our family of 4, but between the cozy loft upstairs, the lovely bedroom, and the unbelievable balcony, we all had plenty of personal space. Shelley, the owner, has thought of everything, and the apartment was impeccably clean. We loved the Provençal décor. The location of the apartment is ideal --you have views of the bay from the balcony, while the bedroom and bathroom look onto the quaint Place du Conseil, where for centuries villagers have been gathering fresh water from the fountain. We walked to the boulangerie each morning and the beach each afternoon. Breakfast on the balcony was our favorite thing (one of many favorite things!). The village itself is perfect for families – you can be as active or as lazy as you choose. After visiting bustling Monte Carlo and Ventimiglia, we really appreciated the laid-back, quiet feel of Villefranche. Everyone was so friendly, the beaches were spectacular and amazing local food was abundant. We felt a little guilty about not making more use of the well-appointed kitchen, but every day we found a new restaurant to try. Shelley provided so many thoughtful ideas for restaurants and sightseeing, the hardest part was deciding what to do next! We particularly enjoyed Le Cosmo and La Grignotiere for dinner. We also loved that the apartment felt very safe and secure – no worries about leaving the kids at night for a walk along the bay. Our entire family would highly recommend the Waterfront Penthouse – for adults and kids alike.

Perfect place, perfect apartment

Review Submitted: April 27, 2010 Date of Stay: January 2010
If Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the most perfect places on the Riviera - and I think it is - this apartment has to be the perfect place to see it from. The host is charming, welcoming, informative and always on hand in case of any questions. Villefranche is within a short bus or train trip to Nice, Cannes, Monaco or even Italy (about 30 mins by train) and the railway station is less than minutes walk away. The apartment itself is like the home on the Riviera that you always wanted. It's comfortable. Even during a five week period, we never felt we were lacking anything. The chairs are good for reading in. the kitchen is superbly equipped. There's a barbecue. Breakfast on the balcony looking almost directly down at the sea is an experience. There's a good butcher and a wonderful patisserie nearby. The owner will direct you to restaurants ranging from the cheap and wonderful La Serre to the Michelin mentioned La Mere Germaine - all within three minutes walk. The old town, where the apartment is situated, is still lived in and full of charm and mystery. One of the nicest features of this apartment is the mezzanine bedroom where you wake to the light reflected off the sea. The sunrises are miraculous - if you're awake to experience them. All in all, this is one of the best places we've ever stayed in in France. I can't recommend it more.
