House and local:
The house has a comprehensive manual of information about its equipment, village facilities, nearby restaurants and local attractions, plus a collection of maps and guides. As well as the village supermarket, there are others (plus a food market) in São Martinho, and several large supermarkets in the town of Caldas da Rainha (8 miles). Caldas also has an excellent daily food market, an attractive park (boating, playground), all main services and many restaurants and cafes. There are walks from the house onto the headland overlooking the bay and the Atlantic, and also nearby are the surf beaches of Foz do Arelho and Nazare.
Among historic sites nearby is the walled city of Óbidos (10 miles), once a Moorish stronghold, a lovely little town, it is good for browsing shops, cafés and bars. If you have a good head for heights you can walk along the unprotected city walls to enjoy the views. 12 miles away is the superb Mosterio de Santa Maria de Alcobaça, a World Herotage site.

The Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros (18 miles inland) is a limestone range that rises into high plateaus and peaks and sinks into huge depressions. The park is famous for its caves, but above ground is spectacular, too, in particular the high Planalto de Santo António. Hills covered in gorse and olive groves divided by dry-stone walls and threaded by cattle trails, offering good walks. You can also see a well preserved stretch of Roman road In the park there are over a dozen picnic areas (parques de merendas) and many walking trails (percursos pedestres).
There are many other places to visit too, World Heritage monasteries at Tomar and Batalha, Castles at Leiria and Porto do Mos, the shrine at Fátima, the towns of Santarém, Coimbra, Sintra and many museums and art galleries plus Lisbon itself just an hour's drive or take the express coach from São Martinho
