A recently modernized traditional house in the heart of the old walled town of Peniche, within walking distance of fabulous beaches and restaurants. Casa Azul is in a quiet road behind Church of Saint Pedro yet is convenient for all the town's amenities, the coastal paths, marina, fort and choice of beaches. Spacious open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas, fully equipped and with satellite TV, opening onto a good-sized courtyard with barbecues, partially covered for outside dining. Downstairs toilet and separate laundry room. Upstairs the large main bedroom has a double bed as well as space for an optional fold-out singe bed; one single bedroom; bedroom three has a single bed with further pull-out single bed, and opens onto a secluded balcony. Good-sized shower room with toilet and basin. Well placed for bakeries, shops, cafes, restaurants and wine cooperative shop. Rental price includes linen, cleaning and the services of an on-call manager. Helpful guide to area provided.

Peniche is surrounded by an excellent choice of beautiful sandy beaches - Praia Norte for relaxing, Baleal for body-boarding or Supertubos for surfing.The walled old town of Peniche is cobbled and has a number of historic attractions including the fort museum and churches and lace-making cooperatives. It has an excellent choice of restaurants and cafes serving the delicious local produce, wines and of course fish as Peniche is one of Portugal's foremost harbour towns. There are coastal walking paths around the peninsula, for bird watching and Atlantic views. Daily excursions from Peniche Marina to Isle of Berlenga, a nature reserve in the Atlantic Ocean. Peniche is a traditional town with many small shops and the daily Municipal Market. Peniche is well placed for day trips around the lovey region, including Obidos, Sintra and Lisbon, with many destinations reachable by public transport.

  • Reduced couple-only rate for all weekly rental periods: Jan/Feb: €335; March/April €400; May/June €525; July/August €700; Sept/Oct: €525; Nov/Dec: €335.
  • All rental prices are fully inclusive and include cleaning and laundry and on-call manager. Airport transfers can be arranged. Extras include welcome pack of food and drink, as well as cot and hire chair hire. Please note beach towels are not provided. In high season, guests are required to vacate by 10am on their last morning; incoming guests can move in at 5pm. We can be flexible at other times.

Peniche: Peniche is a rugged peninsula fringed with beautiful sandy beaches, just one hour's drive north of Lisbon, Portugal's vibrant capital city. At its centre, is the old town of Peniche with its narrow cobbled streets and ancient walls, lapped by the high tides. Peniche is a centre for lace-making and has annual calendar of traditional festivals and carnivals. There is a fabulous choice of beaches from the calm and family-friendly (Praia Norte) through to great body-boarding beaches (Baleal) and the famous surfing beach of Supertubos. Excellent coastal paths can be taken around the peninsula for bird-watching and Atlantic views. The nature reserve of Isle de Berlenga can be reached by boat daily from the marina. Peniche is one of Portugal's main fishing harbours, and many of the fisherman still use small individual boats. The fishing industry has been sited away from the town, but of course its produce is eaten fresh daily in the restaurants and sold in the market.

Fort Museum: A fascinating insight into 20th century Portuguese history. Here opponents, some of them high school students, were locked up and sometimes tortured if they opposed the country's dictator Salazar. In 1974, guards were dramatically overwhelmed and prisoners freed when the people of Peniche marched on the fort. Makes us look at the old citizens quite differently! Look out for squares and roads named after significant dates in Portuguese history.

Food and Drink of Peniche: Peniche is a gastronome's delight. Visitors will enjoy the fruits of the fertile surrounding Estramadura region - wines, olives, cheeses, meats and of course fish - the daily catch from Peniche harbour - in the many restaurants. The Municipal Market runs daily except Sundays- upstairs are marble slabs of fish brought in straight from the Atlantic. Many cafes produce a delicious vegetable soup at lunchtime. In the evening, relax in one of the beachside bar/cafes or shellfish restaurants and watch the sun set.

A holiday in Peniche

We stayed at Casa Azul for the second time this year, having discovered it by chance in 2008.

The house is incredibly well positioned in a quiet street (apart from the seagulls!) close to the marina, the fort, the shops and the restaurants. It is only a 20 minute stroll from two fabulous beaches, ideal for surfing, if that is what you want, but also ideal just to walk along or to sunbathe. There is also a small, family friendly beach about 8-10 walk minutes from the house.

The location is perfect if you don't want the hassle of hiring a car. We hired one the first year we were there but only used it to get to and from the airport. This year we used a taxi and the very efficient air conditioned coach service to get to Peniche and a taxi to get back to Lisbon.

There are lovely walks along the cliffs and the beaches and the restaurants are great. There are loads of restaurants within easy walking distance of the house which serve beautiful freshly caught fish which you can choose for youself, as well as typical Portuguese meat dishes such as pork with clams (delicious!) and they are much cheaper than the Algarve!

If you want to venture outside the area, there are regular bus/coaches to surrounding towns and villages so a car really is not necessary.

There is a very friendly 'village feel' about the place although it is larger than many places where we have stayed previously - a typical Portuguese holiday resort without too many English voices around at the moment....

These guests have stayed at Casa Azul two years running - four weeks in total - and its nice to know that others share our enthusiasm for Peniche. We also like the fact that a car is not necessary to get around; bus, coach, walking or a taxi for odd locations are often all that is needed. The coach to Lisbon makes for a very convenient day trip to Portugal's wonderful capital city. The fact that museums and attractions stay open late also means visitors can take in alot in one visit before heading back to Peniche on one of the evening coaches.

Sweet place to stay

We arrived in Lisbon around 8pm and were sitting in a beautiful fish restaurant by 9.15pm in Peniche, just around the corner from the Casa Azul.

We were a troupe of surfers, beginners and advanced who were lucky enough to stay in the Casa Azul.

The villa itself is cozily situated in the heart of the old town and a short walk to the many cafes and restaurants there.

It was clean, well maintained and comfortable and the owners were always happy to give us sound advice.

The main purpose of our visit was surfing and the area has splendin breaks all around. We mostly surfed in Baleal ( 10 minutes up the coast) but also had the luck to see Stig Evans ride the tubes in Supertubos - a break famed for its large tubing waves,

We have a few other professionals among our guests who love to get away from the office for a long weekend surfing, and of course the fish restaurants
