Funchal holiday apartment

My partner and I stayed in this apartment in October 2009. Firstly the weather, it was fantastic! 28 degrees and sunny in Funchal; but could be cloudy in the mountains at the same time. The apartment itself was really lovely, nicely decorated and the owner has made so much effort with the finishing touches that we had a wonderful and romantic week. For example, some of the things that were included were; tissues and toilet tissue, soap, washing up liquid, good quality kitchen equipment, a delicious and very generous welcome pack of food, and drink, all linen and towels including beach towels, washing machine and detergent, domestic equipment, anti-bac wipes, candles... and the owner herself is helpful, friendly and kind. The bed was great, two singles together but with no discomfort because of that, just lots of room to relax. It is on the 11th floor and there is a balcony with seating overlooking the pool below to the left and the Atlantic all around. There is ample seating and a posh TV (surplus to our requirements), importantly the shower is powerful and warm. Everything was clean and the hotel itself is a fresh and friendly place, they provide a courtesy bus to and from Funchal several times a day. We enjoyed the pool and sunloungers and we hired a car for 3 days (85 euros) to tour to the west of Funchal and up into the mountains. There are bananas growing everywhere and the feeling is ver European - but different, and quite tropical. Some areas seem quite poor away from teh capital. We would not have missed our day at Pico Arieiro for anything, at 1800m high there is some tough walking, although the way is paved, in return for the effort you get awesome views of the mountains above the clouds. Locally there is a sea promenade and a very local supermarket, and Funchal is only a 20 minute walk. We found it an inexpensive place and the people were very friendly. Any criticisms? The apartment was a little noisy at night, being above a road and I imagine in the summer the lack of air-con might be a problem. Otherwise, ours was a dreamy holiday and I would highly recommended it.
