Photos and Description of this Le Chatelard holiday chalet Perfect for winter/ summer sports - or to simply chill and relax. Sleeps 8.

Situated on a hillside on the outskirts of Le Chatelard in the heart of the Massif des Bauges regional park. Le Chatox enjoys superb views through the valley towards the mountains and is a 30 minute drive from the beautiful towns of Annecy and Aix-Les Bains. Le Chatelard is easily accessible but still remains unspoilt and retains a certain charm with its old store fronts and little alleys leading up towards the church. It is a quiet, friendly village with a supermarket, bakery, bar and hotel/restaurant, tourist information, bank and post office and a local food market every Friday morning. Les Bauges (the Wallows), an area of outstanding natural beauty, heritage and tradition makes a great base to explore a wide range of outdoor activities or to simply relax. Great value for money ski resorts Les Aillons and Margeriaz charge only 93 euro for a week pass! The French will wonder how you discovered their secret resort! Summer cycling is amazing. The perfect winter summer destination.

Further details for this holiday chalet rental in Le Chatelard, France

Inside Chatox : As an eco friendly new-build chalet, Le Chatox has under-floor heating on the first floor and radiators in all bedrooms and bathrooms. Hot water is via solar panels in the roof. The lounge has board games, chess and card games for children as well as the TV/DVD player. There is a collection of books which we plan to add to and local maps and info on what’s on in the area to plan your itinerary. We've started a book on things to see and do and encourage you to add to this for future guests. The open plan living area is large and with 8 of us there last summer we never felt overcrowded or on top of each other. The L sofa and double sofa seat 8 comfortably and there's also the rocking chair and guitar with some easy cord music from our collection if you fancy a strum and sing along after dinner and wine! There is no wi-fi as I write but it will come but passing time soaking in the amazing view with some melancholy music and a glass as the fire crackles is surely more preferable

terrace and 'cave': On the terrace balcony is a dining table that can seat 8 comfortably. There are eight chairs to go with it. There is a bbq in the cave. Please clean and replace the bbq if you use it. We are a cycling family so the cave has our Thompson tandem and a 'Giant' mountain bike for children to 5'4'. Please feel free to use but any punctures or mechanical issues should be dealt with or reported to me before vacating. Remember, this is serious cycling territory!

Cycling Heaven: Les Bauges is serious cycling county. The Dauphine Libere with Alberto Contador and World Champion Cadel Evans came right past Le Chatox in June 2009 as the warm up to Le Tour de France. I can advise on routes for all abilities and the best places to stop and eat! You need to be good on the hills around here so a compact chain set or 39 x 28 bottom gear is advised unless you wear an 'S' under your shirt..! In July a group of us cycled to Annecy to watch the Time Trial in the Tour. The ride back up the 12km Col de Leschaux from 400 - 900meters in the pouring rain but still 25 degrees was awesome. We arrived back at Le Chatox in the sunshine and dry. One guest described it as the best cycling day of his life. Say no more... Mountain bike trials are all over Les Bauges. The Toursit info offcie has maps with all routes.

Ski: Skiing in Les Bauges provides ‘real skiing’ with local people. Aillons-Margeriaz is only 15 mins drive from Le Chatox. The ski resort is a hidden gem frequented by the French in the know and has enough slopes to suit skiers of all abilities and a snow park. It is perfect for beginners and brilliant for intermediates and families with small children who might not want to spend a whole week skiing and want to mix it up with visits to Annecy, Aix-Les-Bains or Chambery. You will be staggered at comparisons to the big resorts in price where you can pay 220euro for a week liftpass and may only cover 10% of the piste area in a week. Lift passes in Les Bauges are only 94 euro for a wk!! Kids rates go to under 15years and are 75euro. Day rates are 19euro. We have a great agent for discounts on equipment hire at apprx 45 euro for ski's and boots! For this reason, Le Chatox is a great base for first time & internmediate skiers who get real value for money. Its also very quiet with no crowds.

Golf: There are two courses at Annecy about a 35min drive. I've played Lac d'Anncy at Talloires and it was superb. Its short at about 5000 meters but its a real test of iron play and the scenery is superb. 49euro a round - worth it.

Chalet in the Alps with two teenagers!

Review Submitted: October 27, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We spent 10 nights in this brand new, idyllic, spacious chalet, some 20 miles from the shores of Lake Annecy. A short 5 minute walk to the local village of Le Chatelard let us sample typical Savoyard hospitality. The local tourist information bureau here was really helpful and told us where to go for white water rafting, a one and a bit hours' drive away to the town of of Aime (check out franceraft). Excellent local walks leave from the village and the Chalet. It is also near enough to cycle to the village of Lescheraines where you can swim in the freshwater lake. We had some super days out on lakeside beaches at Annecy and Aix les Bain. We drove down to Annecy with our bikes, parking just out of town and cycled in, joining the cycleway which goes around the lake. If you're not up to the hill cycling you will love these paths; also they are safe if you are bringing young children. Whilst there we took in the excitement of the Tour de France which was fantastic; an especially memorable moment was seeing Lance Armstrong making his comeback. The chalet is homely and comfortable and has fabulous views out over the countryside from one of two balconies. Bedrooms are roomy and cosy and sleeping was not a problem, following leisurely barbecues on the balcony with a few local wines!! We had a couple of journeys out to see the nearby ski resorts of Les Aillons (a scrumptiousTartiflette enjoyed there) and Margeriaz. These looked to be ideal for family skiers who don't like crowds or the hulry burly of the really commercial resorts. Worth a look. Another great day out was to Chamonix which was about an hour and a half away by car. It's easy to park there and you can enjoy a gondola ride up the mountain to view the glacier (mer de glace) and the ice caves. We walked from the mid station to the ice caves which took about two and a half hours but what stunning views. Also on a literary note Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein visited this area and used it as the setting for a meeting between the monster and Victor in her famous novel. Weirdly enough this was my teenage sons' set book for GCSE coursework which he had just finished doing. We recommend you phone ahead and prebook the cable car to avoid the queue. We did loads of cycling, just watch out though, as it is the Alps. Would definitely go again but maybe look at the fly drive option, although we'd need to find a bike hire place.

Autumn in Les Bauges

Review Submitted: October 26, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Just returned from a magnificent week in this most unspoilt yet beautiful part of France. Was in two minds about writing a review because I am just a little afraid that people might be tempted by its beauty and tranquility and come in their droves!

This is real alps where little English is spoken but a warm welcome given. Life has a different pace about it and you relax the moment you arrive.

We spent a fabulous week walking in stunning scenery and enjoying the excellent facilities that this alpine chalet had to offer, exceptonal views and a really high standard of comfort. We could not have asked for more.

Last year we skied here and If you are looking for a ski resort ( there are 2 within 10-15 min drive of this property) that has a family feel about it and where the right outfit and designer sunglasses are not essential then you have picked the right place.

We have already booked a week this winter and cannot wait to return, however please don't tell too many people about it because we love it just the way it is.
