Walking:
Immediately behind the croft you find yourself in the rugged, beautiful countryside for which the Highlands are renowned. For those who prefer pre-planned routes, there are many recommended walks in the vicinity, some inland, others along the coast with its endless sandy beaches.
Sightseeing:
Nearby Dornoch, with its imposing cathedral, castle-turned-hotel and sedate houses built from the characteristic soft red sandstone of the region, is one of a number of Eastern coastal towns within easy reach of Muie. A few miles up the coast from Dornoch is another golfing centre, Golspie.
Just outside the town is Dunrobin Castle, the ancestral home of the Dukes of Sutherland. Its commanding view of the sea, fine collection of art and period furniture, tiered gardens and Summer falconery displays make it well worth a visit.
Other towns to visit include Brora and Helmsdale to the North and Tain to the South. Inland, not far from Lairg, are the Falls of Shin, with its famous salmon leap, and, more improbably, a Harrods retail outlet.
John O'Groats is an hour and a half away. From there it is a 40 minute ferry trip to the Orkneys with their rich history, distinctive culture and abundant wild life.
Fishing:
There are several salmon and trout fishing rivers in the area including the Brora and Oikle as well as numerous lochs, including Loch Muie a small loch within easy walking distance of the cottage.
Golf:
The nearest golf courses are the links courses at Royal Dornoch and Golspie both about 7 miles away.
