Les Landes du Mauchat, near Thiviers

We had never stayed in a gite before, and, having heard some horror stories, did not know what to expect, but we were absolutely delighted with Les Landes. The gite itself is small but perfectly formed, well equipped from good quality bedding right down to teaspoons and bottle-openers - you won't need to take anything with you - and the surroundings, consisting of 25 acres of well-maintained woodland are perfect for dog-walking. (The owner has his own dog, who enjoys meeting new visitors) The pool is clean and well-maintained, and is lit at night so you can sit round it with your barbecue in very romantic surroundings. The nearest town, Thiviers, is a typical small French market town, but there is no night-life. There are, however, numerous small villages and several small towns within easy driving distance, so you need never be bored, and although the only restaurants in Thiviers are not open in the evenings, the nearest village of St.Jean de Cole, has two very acceptable, friendy places to eat, and of course if you want to drive further afield there are several restaurants in the surrounding towns.
The owner is friendly and helpful, without being intrusive, and we would have no hesitation in recommending this gite to anyone who is looking for a quiet, peaceful place to stay in beautiful surroundings. There are no noisy neighbours (well, no neighbours at all, apart from the owner, who is quiet and well-behaved)_
We "discovered" les Landes two years ago and were absolutely delighted to find the weeks we wanted available again this year. All in all, we think it is a delightful place to stay and are looking forward to going again next year if we can find the time.
