Monte Argentario: this mountain is an island that is twofold connected to the continent. These narrow dunes 'Tombolo di Feniglia' and 'Tombolo di Gianella' have become headlands later in the early history. The oldest place of the mountain-island is Porto Ercole, about which the myth says that it belonged to the adored Greek hero Hercules. The main place is, however, Porto Santo Stefano that had only 60 inhabitants in 18th century, and it belonged as region and parish to Orbetello. People from Neapel, Ligurien and Toscana settled here, established trading and went at sea. They terraced the mountain and planted fruits and vine. Ansedonica grapes. In 1610, the painter Caravaggio died lonely in Feniglia. Porto Santo Stefano has a Spanish fortress from the 16th century. In its center, a well known port, which is the destination of many yachts and sailing boats, and a unique coast with crystal clear water. This is also a divers’ paradise.
