The enormous Omayyad Mosque with its richly decorated interior, the Roman walls & gates, the Biblical sites, the hammams & of course the bustling markets hold visitors in a spell of fascination. The wealth of historical sites date back to the many different periods of the city's history, where mosques, churches, the old city walls & ancient souqs testify to the occupation of Greeks and Romans, Persians, Christians, & the Islamic Omayyad Empire. Warm sunny climate: Some 50 miles from the sea yet separated from it by two mountain ranges, Damascus gets only about 7 inches of rain annually, most of it in its short winter from December to February. A short blossoming spring in March/April is followed by 6/7 months of hot dry summer. Daytime temperatures average 38°C in July/August, hot enough to make all your friends jealous back home!
