This 200 year old restored original country house with authentic features such as original stone walls, a fireplace and a bread oven has just become available for holiday rental (November 2009). The house close to the centre of the historical agricultural market village of Prazeres and levada walks into UNESCO protected forest is surrounded by private fruit and vegetable gardens still tended by the Madeiran family owners. The property has almost unbroken views across hilly farmland to the Atlantic Ocean 10 minutes drive away. A private entrance leads to the driveway then to the house with its large covered barbecue area converted from a barn. The 3 bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin, 1 single) sleep 5. The large open plan lounge is next to the dining area and kitchen. The lounge has doors opening out on to a path running the whole length of the house. There are bathrooms on all floors. All the bedrooms have views across farm hill land to the Ocean. The double bedroom opens onto a sun terrace.

Prazeres is a historic agriculture village perched on mountains with views of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a mountain and levada (water canal) walking paradise. By walking these special walks you will access some of the most remote and beautiful landscapes of the island. In the village centre there are several restaurants, shops, a pizzeria, cafes and an ATM cash machine. There is still an agricultural market every Sunday. 10 minutes drive down the 'Via Rapida' fast road are the picturesque fishing villages of Paul & Jardim do Mar surrounded by banana fields where the world surfing championships have been held. Besides the 17th century Church, attractions include the 'Quinta Pedagogica' (free admission) a country estate managed by the local priest with a small zoo, herb gardens , a tea and cider house and an art centre.

Prazeres famous walks: famous walks in the Prazeres area include the '25 fountains' (starting point Rabacal) 'the Levada Nova' and 'the Caminho Real do Paul do Mar' PR19. The latter walk starts in Prazeres at a height of 535 metres and goes down to Paul do Mar Harbour. It is about 2 kilometres long and takes up to 80 minutes to walk. During the walk there are fantastic views of the fishing villages of Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, waterfalls and flora. This trail is one of the historic “municipal paths” on Madeira. These paths were the only means of access to villages before roads were built. Also, it was cheaper to use the path for transporting goods than bringing them by sea which was more expensive and dangerous when the sea was rough.

Calheta's art centre on the cliffs!: The ‘Casa das Mudas’ international Arts Centre is a ‘landmark’ in Madeira. The Centre with spectacular views sits on the top of a cliff that abruptly stops when it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the centre including a theatre and permanent and temporary contemporary art exhibitions is hidden within the cliff. The black basalt stone of the centre’s outside reflects Madeira’s skylight and helps it integrate with the natural landscape.

Calheta attractions nearby: white sand beaches next to Calheta marina. Opposite the marina is a supermarket. Dolphin-watching, whale-watching and big-game fishing boats operate from the marina. Other attractions include the international award-winning art centre ‘Casa das Mudas’ and ‘Engenho da Calheta’ an ‘aguardente’factory up the hill from the marina and white sand beaches
