Murlo is situated 25 km south of Siena at an altitude of 300 m, 10 km above the ancient Roman Cassia road which links Florence to Rome. It overlooks the Crete Hills dotted with Cyprus trees, olive groves, vineyards and fields of wheat and sunflowers to one side and endless uncontaminated forest to the other. The famous hill towns of the Val d'Orcia - Montalcino, Montepulciano, Pienza etc - are just a short drive away, and both the centre of Florence and the coast can be reached in less than 1h 30m. The beautiful 14th-century Benedictine abbey of Monte Oliveto is a short way up the hill from the lovely old market town of Buonconvento on the Cassia.
Murlo boasts world-famous Etruscan museum housing finds from a local site and is within easy reach of many of the main archaeological areas and museums of this fascinating pre-Roman culture. The small town of Vescovado is 1 km away and has all the basic amenities: food shops, newsagent's, pharmacy, bank, post office, doctor's surgery.
