Asturias holiday cottage: Pico Los Rozos

The Cottage: El Balcon has been completely restored and is now an attractive, comfortable holiday home for 2. The cottage is on two floors, furnished with a mix of antique and new pieces. Downstairs is the suntrap porch which leads into an open living/dining room with a glass doored wood burning fireplace and a sofa bed. The well-equipped corner kitchen is tiled and easy to work in with a full size refrigerator and a 4 burner cooker with oven. Upstairs the bedroom invites with its large queen-size bed, en-suite bathroom, spacious washbasin and sitting area. The large sunny balcony off the bedroom offers unending entertainment as you watch the weather change over the valley and ocean beyond. Not one but two lighthouses can be seen at night, Cabo Peñas and Cabo Vidio. A short walk up from the rest of the farm El Balcon is just far enough removed to make it the ideal place for people who want to relax or even need a quiet spot to write and work. You will feel you have truly escaped.

The Setting, Clean and Organic: The Balcon is a perfect setting for those with a small child or baby. No need to apologize to anyone when the baby cries. We have a baby cot, bedding and highchair available. Because we are committed to protecting the environment as much as possible and enjoy our organic lifestyle our linens are washed in natural soaps and sun dried. The house has features which save on energy and we recycle. Our chickens are the first step in the composting process and we invite you to help out with the farm economy by offering your leftovers and scraps to them. We do not own a tractor or heavy farm machinery and there is no traffic. Organic dry food items are available for purchase and we are happy to share the seasonal abundance of the garden. Flowers and herbs are always available for the picking. We keep a few cows, sheep, chickens, rabits, a dog and some cats.

Walking the Hills, Leaving the Car: Walking trails lead off from the cottage and topographical maps are available of the area. The Camino de Santiago runs behind the property linking Oviñana and Ballota along our ridge above the ocean. There are a number of maintained coastal walks as well as mountain trails in the Valley of Paredes, the Natural Park of Somiedo to mention just a few. All the informatin you need is in the cottage and in its absence we can help you. The FEVE train runs along the coast and provides an alternative way to Gijon or Oviedo for the day. Schedules are available. For those considering a holiday without a car it is possible. There are local taxis willing to pick you up at the airport, wait while you shop and then bring you here. Just a phone call away they can pick you up anytime and anywhere during your stay. We and local bars are happy to call for you.
