Eygalieres is officially designated one of the most beautiful villages in France and dates back to pre Roman times. The oldest, fortressed area of the village is located on the hill overlooking the famous Alpilles (little Alps), that dominate this area of Provence. The village street meanders gently down the hill, lined with charming old stone houses and gardens with rambling roses and gnarled old vines. The village is a typical mix of old Provence and cosmopolitan sophistication. There are simple corner cafes and up market restaurants and a wonderful market every Friday. It's a delight to stroll up to the 9th century church on the hilltop, then pick up a newspaper (English, French, American etc.) and a baguette on the way down before taking a coffee and ice cream, then wandering home. This really is a lovely village with great walks and stunning rural surroundings. All the delights of Provence are within easy reach by car. Including St Remy, Les Baux citadel and Van Gogh memorial.
