Bruges is unique, in the sense that the town authorities have done the utmost to preserve the medieval-looking image of the city. Of course, not every stone in Bruges has come to us straight from the Middle Ages. The 19th century neo-gothic style is more present than you would imagine. Because of these 19th century renovations, some critics have put Bruges down as a 'fake' medieval city. Nevertheless, the combination of old, not so old and new fascinates everyone who first sets foot in Bruges. Upon visiting Bruges, you will immediately notice that this city has always carefully cherished its architectural and artistic treasures from the past. Walking is the best way to discover Bruges. The city is rather small - you can easily walk across it in half an hour. The inhabitants of Bruges invite you to join them and enjoy it as much as they do.

Sights
The historic city centre was added to the Unesco’s World Heritage List. The current city boundaries still coincide exactly with those of the medieval city centre, and the spaces and structures that were so typical of Bruges in the past have been preserved. This, however, does not mean that there is no room for modern architecture and modern work and living spaces. Take your time to walk through busy squares, refreshing parks and quiet, intimate cobbled streets, and do not forget to visit the modest almshouses as well as the imposing patrician’s homes!
Museums
Basilica of the Holy Blood: H.-Bloedbasiliek: Double chapel. On ground level : St. Basil's Chapel (1139-1149) in roman style. The first floor chapel, converted into gothic style in the 15th century, contains a.o. the famous Relic of the Holy Blood (worship : every Friday). Church services on Sundays: 8 a.m. & 11 a.m. * Choco-Story: A great experience! You are immersed in the ancient Mexican world of the Mayas and the Aztecs for whom chocolate was the drink of the gods and cocoa beans a means of payment. * The chocoholic gets to find out all about the production of chocolate truffles, chocolates, hollow figures and bars of chocolate. * Lace centre: Housed in the tastefully restored almshouses founded by the Adornes family. Lace demonstrations are frequently given, whereas in the museum-shop all materials for lace-making can be purchased.
Mills and Town gates
Ever since their completion in the 13th century and until the 19th century, Bruges’ outer ramparts were dotted with windmills. Nowadays, 4 windmills dominate the ‘Kruisvest’. The St Janshuismolen, which dates from 1770, is the only mill that has remained in its original position. Both windmills are still operational and are used to grind flour. Ezelpoort, Smedenpoort, Kruispoort, Gentpoort * (Blacksmiths’ Gate, Ghent Gate, Cross Gate, Donkey’s Gate) These old city gates were part of the medieval ramparts that were built around Bruges in the 13th- 14th centuries. These ramparts are now a green belt around the city centre inviting the visitor to take a stroll or go for a cycle ride. Casa Gratituda is situated only 100 m from the Blacksmith's Gate , with a nice view on the ramparts around Bruges.
