3 bedroom townhouse to sleep 4 adults in centre of lovely busy Gascon village

The Cottage has 2 double bedrooms and 1 single bedroom. The rear bedroom has far reaching views across to the Pyrenees and makes a wonderful room to paint in or write. There's a shower room/wc upstairs and 2nd shower room/WC downstairs. The kitchen is equipped with microwave, oven, gas hobs, fridge and top loading w/machine. The sunny living/dining room has a large French window onto a vine covered terrace & garden with views over the ramparts. In the living room there's a woodburning stove and electric radiators for chilly winter days though the cottage is thankfully cool during the hot summer months with its 600m deep walls. The Cottage is just down the road from the main square of Valence with its weekly market, butcher's, 3 bakers, general stores, bank, post office and church. The cottage is a quiet place to visit. A place to read and a great base for house hunting, reading, painting, strolling down to the river and just being. Utterly peaceful, charming & restful.

Valence is part of the circuit of legendary Bastide towns in Gascony. Worth visiting Fources and Larressingle, perfectly preserved mediaeval fortified villages. Also the Roman mosaic at Seviac near Montreal. Valence has its own Porte de l'Herisson, 12th Century Cistercian Abbaye de Flaran with its legendary permanent art exhibition of French impressionists, nearby Museum of Naif Art, Thermal Spa 5 miles away in Castera Verduzan with its Casino and where there's also a popular lake with canoeing, swimming, pedalos, cafe and watersports great for young families. Toulouse airport is the nearest, about 1.20 mins away, with a bus service that comes right into the town square. Car rental available locally. Armagnac, wine & fois gras visits can be arranged nearby at Chateaux and local producers' farms.

  • DAMAGES DEPOSIT

    We ask for a small damages deposit of £50 please, if you could bring this with you when you arrive, or
    you could transfer this to our UK stirling account one week before you arrive.
    We will either return your £50 to you when you leave after an inspection, or transfer it back to your account on your return.

    Rental is negotiable for longer lets.

    Over the winter period, i.e. October - April, lets do not include electricity which will be billed separately.
    A meter reading will be taken before and after the tenancy and charged at 0.12euros per unit.
    Settlement immediately at end of tenancy deducted from the 50eurodeposit.
  • We prefer weekly lets to run Saturday to Saturday please, thank you.
    For a longer let we will be as flexible as possible.

    WE PROVIDE OUR TENANTS WITH A CODE TO THE KEY SAFE BY THE FRONT DOOR
    and ask that the key be returned to this key safe on departure.

    We usually supply sheets and towels for the holiday lets. However we ask you to look after them as we will have

500 YARDS FROM BAR RESTAURANT!: The Cottage is on rue Jean Jaures which leads to the main square of this thriving little market town.

There are 2 bar restaurants which are amongst the most popular in the area, extremely busy at lunchtimes

when the square is filled with local businessmen and tourists.

Both Bar Restaurants serve table d'hote menus at 12 euros for 4 courses with wine which is fantastic value!

In the summer months from May - September there's a further charming bar restaurant down by the river

where the canal boats moor up where they serve very reasonable set price meals with wine from

10euros for 2 courses with wine.

ACCOMMODATION NOTES IN THE COTTAGE: PLEASE NOTE:

Ideal accommodation in the Cottage is for a typical 2.2 family with the parents occupying the main double bedroom,

with 1 child in the back bedroom and another baby/young child in the tiny single bedroom.

Or 2 couples, occupying the 2 double bedrooms. The tiny single bedroom is not private and not suitable for a

5th adult as access is only through one of the double bedrooms.

Would suit 2 single visitors each with their own double bedroom.

We always try to be honest about the accommodation in this really charming cottage. No one's been disappointed yet, but we worry when we see 5 adults trying to occupy the place!!

Lovely Holiday Property

Similarly to Quintin T's review, when Kate and I stayed at "The Cottage" in August this year we were completely happy with the experience and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.

The location of the property is in only a small and quiet town which was exactly what we wanted. The cottage itself was perfect for the two of us, although I can imagine would still be great for 4 people. Inside there was plenty of room and everywhere was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Janice and Stewart were extremely friendly, warm and welcoming - despite us arriving a whole day earlier than we had communicated! Their wealth of local knowledge and recommendations gave us more than enough to do on our weeks holiday and we had a great night joining them at the great St. Puy festival.

The only point I would make as more of a caution to visitors than a true criticism is that the garden area is rather small and not condusive to sitting in the sun in great numbers. Still, that was no problem for us as we were out and about every day and enjoyed sitting out in the garden of an evening making the most of the fantastic local wine in privacy.

In all this is a lovely property and I would recommend it to anyone with a car that wants to explore this beautiful area of France.

A lovely cottage ideally located in the Gers

I stayed in this property in September 2010 and was prompted to write this review in the light of that written by Bob R. Like him, I called the owners to confirm my arrival time and was met by Stewart in the main square and then taken down to the cottage but my experiences both of the owners and the property itself were quite different. My first impressions of the cottage were extremely positive. The house was spotless, charmingly decorated, with a calm and warm atmosphere. And very well equipped too. Of particular note was the excellent and powerful shower! The garden, though small, was well kept and we spent many a happy evening sat out round the table.

Janice and Stewart had put together a useful guide to local restaurants-the restaurant in St Puy being a firm favourite-, places to visit and the like of which we took full advantage. I can particularly recommend a visit to the wine/Armagnac cooperative at Condom.

Every query we put to Janice and Stewart-e.g in relation to putting out the rubbish-was promptly dealt with and both gave the impression that nothing was too much trouble.

All in all I can strongly recommend this charming property.

Not as good as described

Firstly the location of the cottage is great with plenty to do in the area, but really that's where the praise ends. In the photo's the cottage looks great but in reality I have to say we were a bit disappointed firstly I received an email to say that when we were near the cottage to give the owners a call which we did but when we informed them that we were about one & half hours away the owners words were "Oh Gosh" as though we had caught them out. We arrived at about 1830hrs and picked up the key, Janice seemed very nice and gave us a welcome basket but we could not help in thinking we were a bit of an inconvenience, we had to let ourselves into the cottage and was not shown around, on looking through the basket we were given it consisted of a bottle of wine a jar of marmalade and a slab of butter, the basket also consisted of loads of old carrier bags and a reel of nylon cord for a garden strimmer (perhaps this was a hint, more further on) now although this was a nice jesture but why bother in this case. The cottage itself really needed a good clean and in fact we had to give the kitchen a good going over before preparing or cooking any meals. The garden was overgrown perhaps this is why the nylon cord was in the basket, there was a bbq in the garden which had not been cleaned out. On the sleeping front me and my wife was kept awake by the constant scurrying of birds, mice or even worse rats across the ceiling, so as you can see our stay at the cottage was far from perfect

Excellent holiday cottage

We have stayed in many rental properties in various countries but have never experienced such wonderful hospitality as the owners showed to us. Nothing was too much trouble to make sure we had a wonderful holiday.

The cottage was just as described with beautiful soft furnishings.
It was in a lovely village surrounded by picturesque countryside-ideal for touring round. The surrounding villages in the area had excellent restaurants providing lunch and dinner.

The pretty garden was very pleasant to sit in provoding lovely views of the area.

We would highly recommend this property to other holiday makers in the knowledge that the owners' hospitality could not be surpassed.
