The Alfama River properties consist of 2 apartments in the same building. Alfama River I is a 1-bedroom 4th floor apartment with truly magnificent views of the expansive river Tagus estuary, suitable for up to 4-5 guests. Alfama River II is a 2-bedroom 3rd floor flat with similar layout and furnishings, for up to 6 guests.

These clean & modern properties, renovated in 2009, form part of a traditional building in the historic Alfama district in the heart of central Lisbon, located next to the Santa Apolonia Metro/Train station for convenient transport facilities and nestled amongst the cobbled streets, picturesque squares and traditional Fado restaurants of the charming Alfama district.

The Alfama River II apartment is is a 2-bedroom 3rd floor flat with magnificent views of the expansive River Tagus estuary, and suitable for up to 6 guests. Double bed in main bedroom, 2 singles in 2nd bedroom & a comfortable double sofa-bed in living room, free Internet (both wi-fi and cable), cable TV channels, marvellous views over the river and of Alfama's rooftops, central location close to major transport facilities. This self-catering property is one of a four because we own and rent the 3 other floors also. These apartments have similar space and facilities and can be rented together if you have a large group. The building is located right next to the traditional Alfama district, and is literally just 2 minutes walk from the Santa Apolonia Metro & Train Station, where there is a convenient supermarket. The apartment has truly magnificent views of the expansive River Tagus estuary, and even the Cristo Rei statue across the river in Almada can be seen from its windows.

Just a short walk to major sights such as the National Pantheon - where the famous fado singer Amalia rodrigues is buried - and which is just round the corner, the Fado Museum, Lisbon Castle and Lisbon Cathedral, together with the central squares of Rossio and Praça do Comércio, and the wonderful 'miradouros' (viewpoints) of Alfama, like the Portas do Sol, and Miradouro Santa Luzia.

This area has plenty of cafeterias, bars, traditional fado restaurants, as well as the small village-type shops typical of Alfama.

In the Santa Apolonia station just 150 metres away there is a 'Pingo Doce' supermarket and just opposite the station there is a Chemist's (pharmacy). On the opposite side of the main road, next to the river, there is a large open-air car park which charges approx. 5 Euro per day.

  • The well-lit bathroom has a wash-basin with large mirror, bidet, WC and stand-up shower unit. There is a convenient wooden basket for wet towels, and a wooden shelving for storage of clean ones, plus other bathroom accessories. We provide 2 towels for our guests:1 large and 1 medium. We also provide some small hand towels, shower gel, toilet rolls, hand soap and a hair dryer.

  • The large ceiling to floor window lets the natural light flood in to the bedroom, although of course the window shutters may be used for a peaceful sleep. The main bedroom has an extremely comfortable double bed with a firm, thick mattress. We have installed 2 convenient reading lights on the frame at the head of the bed. There is a small table and wardrobe, and we provide all bed linen, pillows & pillow cases and duvet/eiderdown. The second bedroom has 2 single beds (90cm x 200cm), a fitted wardrobe and lovely views over the river.

Perhaps the most famous course is at the upmarket Penha Longa Golf Club in a former monastic estate, designed by Robert Trent Jones and that has hosted the Portuguese Open.

The Estoril Golf Club, right on the A5 motorway from Lisbon to Cascais, has 27 holes designed by McKenzie Ross. This also hosts the Portuguese Open and international competitions.

Quinta de Marinha, just outside Cascais on the Guincho road, was also designed by Robert Trent Jones and is part of a holiday complex, featuring a driving range, six tennis courts and a hotel.

Another option is Campo de Golfe de Belas, near Queluz-Belas train station, a Championship-standard golf course designed by William Rocky Roquemore.

Apartment fine, stairsem a probl

The apartment is well set up, well located and has great views. However, the stairs, especially the last flight, which is more like a ladder, would be a problem for anyone who is not fit and relatively young. If my wife had been on her own, she would never have got our luggage up there. The owner should make this clear to prospective renters.

Thanks for your review. In fact we do publish this information on our website, for which we sent you the link when you made your initial enquiry about the apartment. This is the statement we publish:

"NOTE: This is a 4th floor apartment in an old traditional area of central Lisbon, where the buildings don't have lifts/elevators and is therefore not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with mobility problems."

On the page I sent you the link for, in reply to your initial enquiry, you can qalso see lots of reviews of previous clients talking about the stairs, but also how the effort was very much worth the climb, due to the magnificent views from the apartment.

As mentioned on that webpage, for some people the steep stairs can be a problem, but we are sure you'll agree that the spectacular views from the apartments are well worth any effort it takes to get to the top. My parents, who are both over 70 years old, stayed in this apartment fior 4 nights and they didn't mind at all climbing the stairs every day, because they knew they were going to be able to enjoy watching the passing cruise ships, warships and sail-boats, together with all the other interesting things the river views offer. The only thing they regretted was not bringing binoculars to be able to see even further across the estuary!

In any case, thanks again for your comments, and you know that you are always welcome back if ever your return to Lisbon.

A wonderful place to stay.

We stayed in this Alfama River 3 apartment, it has a beautiful view and a great location near the fado restaurants and city centre. There are cafés with great pastries close-by, perfect for breakfast, a tapas bar and also a supermarket, metro station and a nice public swimming pool. The apartment was comfortable and clean, with a bright living room and lots of good TV channels in English. The kitchen had everything we needed. Roger was very helpful and easy to contact.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Girls Getaway, Tourists without a Car, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway
