Fuerteventura:
Who will the island appeal to? Above all those who love beaches – Fuerteventura’s are the best in the Canaries and some of them truly world-class. So if you’re a sun-worshipper or a beachcomber, a keen surfer, windsurfer or snorkeller, this is the place for you. Everyone talks about the wind, and yes, it can be breezy here, but the key thing is the sun. Fuerte has longer sunshine hours on average than Tenerife or Gran Canaria and only a fraction of the average rainfall. Those in search of peace and quiet, something which can be hard to find on the more developed Canary Islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, will also love Fuerte. It’s a big place (nearly the size of Tenerife) but with a small population. The roads are well-built but very quiet, making hiring a car (from as little as around £70 a week) a pleasure, and you can really escape from the bustle of modern life, be it on a deserted white beach or in the stark, striking mountains of the interior, with a beauty all their own.
El Cotillo:
The village has some of the finest restaurants in Fuerteventura, including what is reputedly the best Italian restaurant on the island, as well as cafes and bars. Very fresh fish is obviously the big draw on most menus. There is a good bakery/patisserie (currently in French ownership), a couple of banks, a chemist, several general/souvenir places and three small supermarkets. Internet access is available in the village. In other words, most of your everyday needs can be catered for locally. The nearest petrol station is, however, about 15 minutes away at La Oliva, and the next nearest in Corralejo. Petrol prices in the Canaries are much lower than in the UK, so don’t get caught out – fill up when you’re passing. And, should the worst happen and you need a doctor, there is a wide choice of medical facilities in Corralejo. (Our manager will of course help you further.) Regular bus services link El Cotillo with both Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario.
The Complex:
El Caleton is a striking, whitewashed building in a modern interpretation of traditional Canarian style architecture, standing in a sub-tropical garden with dragon trees, bougainvillea, oleander and hibiscus. It is located well away from any other buildings, above a small bay edged by white sand and black lava rocks and with crystal clear water. Our guests literally walk out of the garden onto the beach. The complex consists of just 11 units, 8 two-bedroom apartments and 3 one-bedroom ones, spread over two floors. Most are currently British-owned and we have a British manager available should you encounter any problems during your stay. Our apartment should appeal to anyone who dislikes crowds and big holiday resorts, who doesn’t insist on all the latest gadgets, but is happy to live quite simply for a week or two right beside the sea. A treat for families with younger kids, older couples in search of a get-away from-it-all location, sun-worshippers, bird-watchers and walkers.
