About this property

Comfortable, bright holiday home in historical villa, near market

Modern apartment with charm and comfort in a central but quiet location of Sintra: the market is around the corner and shops and restaurants within walking distance.

Casa José Ricardo dates from the early 20th century and has been lovingly and thoroughly renovated in recent years. Ideally suited for large families or groups of friends who want to indulge in culinary delights and the famous Portuguese wine. Relaxing starting point not far from Lisbon and the Atlantic coast.

Very comfortable beds; gourmet kitchen, terrace and patio (with Weber BBQ), 3 spacious bedrooms, 3 bathrooms. Super fast (500mega) internet, cable TV incl. HBO; books, games and maps. Baby cot, high chair and stair railing: everything there!

The historic tram takes you from here to the beach. All of Sintra's attractions are easily accessible and you are still not in the middle of the hustle and bustle and have a good night's sleep. You can explore the region easily by bus and train - the train station is in 450m - so you don't need a car if you want to do without one on your holiday.

More information: The apartment is on the 1st floor and top floor of the villa. On the first floor two spacious living rooms with terrace, large kitchen and a bathroom. On the 2nd floor are the three bedrooms and two modern bathrooms. Central heating.

Sintra is a magical place, UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers an almost village-like environment, a lot of peace and quiet, but also palaces, castles and parks as well as varied leisure activities. The sea is 12 km away; you can reach the centre of Lisbon in 40 minutes by train. Trains run every 20 minutes.

Feel at home: In the house you will find books and games, TV, and fast internet. Complete modern kitchen equipment (stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer) as well as oil, vinegar and spices. Perfect for a holiday with your family or group of friends.

You can park your car in our garage or the reserved space in front of it.

Wellness, beaches and water sports, culture: Sintra offers a wide range of different beaches: beaches suitable for families with fine sand, rocky beaches with rich flora and fauna, and beaches suitable for surfing and bodyboarding: in particular Praia do Guincho and Praia Grande, where several world championships in these sports have been held.

The Sintra mountains, the "Serra de Sintra", is a granite mountain range of about 10 km in length, which rises abruptly in the wide plain in the north and reaches the mouth of the river Tejo in the south. Its western extension to the Atlantic Ocean is the Cabo da Roca - a headland which is the westernmost point of continental Europe. The Serra de Sintra is home to cultural monuments from a whole range of different eras, from prehistoric times to the present day. Thanks to its unique microclimate, Sintra has some of the most beautiful parks in Portugal, many with a certain romantic touch, and dense green vegetation that gives the region a majestic atmosphere.

Fantastic apartment with everything thought of
This apartment is conveniently located near the train station (but not too near) and also the supermarket and local shops. It is beautiful with high ceilings, lots of light and all mod cons. It was maintained to a very high standard and was very clean. Everything has been thought of for both adults and children - even down to buckets and spades for kids. We really enjoyed the fact that it is in an old Portugese house, but equipped in a modern way. We appreciated the games room, the tourism tips and notes which enabled us to make the best of our trip and really there was nothing that could have been improved. Having access to an outdoor area was nice, and also to a drying rack for beach towels etc. Dagmar the owner was very helpful and kept in contact both pre and during the trip so we felt very looked after. Would really recommend this apartment if you're planning a visit to Sintra as it's central without being right in the thick of it. We found Sintra Old Town a bit hectic and this apartment gives access to that, but without confining you/ children to a hotel room. We visited the Moorish Castle which was quite a climb but excellent, Old Town Sintra, the beach at Praia Grande (fabulous but big surf) and also the whimsical garden opposite the beautiful Palacio Setais - all of which are worth a visit.

About the host

Host profile image
I am German and live in since more than 16 years Portugal with my family. I absolutely love Sintra, and when in 2005 an opportunity arose to buy and a house there, we renovated it for our own use during weekends, and for family visits. In 2009, we decided to rent it out to holiday makers.

Why they chose this property

Sintra is an excellent place to be in short distance to sandy beaches and breathtaking cliffs - and at the same time within easy reach from Lisbon.

What makes this property unique

Our house is one of the 'chalets' which were built around the turn of the century, when the railway line from Lisbon as built. The small town, which had hitherto been reserved to the Portuguese royal family and nobility as summer residence, then became popular among wealthy Portuguese. Besides the large country estates, smaller 'Chalets' for bourgeoisie and the artists were built. Our Villa was designed and built for José Ricardo, an actor and theatre director, who lived here until 1925. When we converted the house into a modern apartment, we tried tho maintain special atmosphere which we had felt at our very first visit.
