Fantastic House on Ile d'Oleron

We have just returned from a very enjoyable stay at La Prucanie. The house was exactly as advertised, very clean, comfortable, well equipped and minutes from the beach. One of the bedrooms is accessed from outside, which we did not realise, although it did not cause any problems. The front terrace is great - fenced off pool, barbecue, lots of sun loungers and lovely terrace with electrically operated sunshade. It's also very private and secure, so perfect for families with young children. We had straightforward, hassle-free dealings with the owner in arranging the letting and were very warmly welcomed on our arrival. I would agree with the previous review that the house would be too small for 14 - we were 5 adults and 3 children - I would say it would comfortably take 6 adults and 6 children at the very most. Two members of our group had mobility issues (one in a wheelchair) and the house was well-suited for them.
The island is not particularly sophisticated, but is perfect for cycling and walking, and there are lots of beautiful beaches within minutes. We particularly liked the beach at Boyardville near the watersports centre. There was a great restaurant there too, right on the beach. We went to Ile de Re for the day which is much more sophisticated, St Martin is like a film set for a gorgeous French port and has the biggest ice cream shop I've ever seen! La Rochelle is worth a day trip, the aquarium is great, but don't go at the weekend as it gets very busy. Overall, a great week in a lovely house.
