You can go shopping in the 2 nearby historical towns of Melle (former silver mines used for minting royal coins, 3 Romanic churches) and Celles (abbey, near the bathing lake). There are also good markets in Niort and Saintes (Gallo-roman amphitheatre). In one hour you can reach the Atlantic coast and the city of La Rochelle (old city and port for island boat trips) as well as the nearby island of Ile de Re. In the South lies the Cote Sauvage coastline, finely sanded wide beaches and pine forests. You can visit the oyster cultivation areas in Marennes and near the island of Oleron, the zoo, ideal for children, in Palmyre and go forest hiking in St. Georges. You will find stately houses in Royan where you can take the ferry to visit the renowned wine-growing region of Medoc with its famous castles. Bordeaux is only two hours away, and West lies Poitiers and the unique Futuroscope amusement park. Goat cheese, wine, sunflower fields, chestnuts – clouds which touch the ground.
