Summary of Capanna, 4 bedrooms, sleeps 9
The idyllic hamlet of Doccione di Sotto is located in a quite remote are at 850 m s.l., at the end of the Valle Santa valley. The property is situated on the border of the Casentino National Park. The Casentino lies between the upper valley of the Arno and Tiber rivers and is a picturesque area rich with Roman and Etruscan churches and monasteries. It is a green oasis on the edge of the Apennine. In our sparsely populated area, you will have wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. While enjoying the nature and silence hiking or bikeriding you can discover the abundant flora and fauna. A wonderful large swimming hole in the local river is only 10 min. by car. There are terraces, a large meadow for relaxing from your visits to the art centres and playing and a sauna. The kitchens are well equipped for self-catering, but we also offer breakfast or halfpension.
Details for the Doccione di Sotto in Poppi area, Arezzo Area, Tuscany, Italy
The guest house consists of 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a large well equipped kitchen with open fire. It may be rented with less rooms if required. Lovely open terrace, in front of the house, under a big old oak tree. We affectionately reconstructed the Capanna made out of natural stone in the local style.

The Casentino lies between the upper valley of the Arno and Tiber rivers and is a picturesque area rich with Roman and Etruscan churches and monasteries. It is a green oasis on the edge of the Apennine, well known for its traditional trade such as iron, wood and stone work and the production of wool. In former times the “salt way” from Germany to Rome crossed this area. There are many activities to occupy the days … visiting the weekly markets in the local towns, tours of the panoramic surroundings, medieval churches, castles and monasteries to explore. Day tours to the art centres of Arezzo (1 hr), Florence (2 h), Perugia (1,5 h), Orvieto (2 h) or to the Adriatic coast, for example Cesenatico or Rimini, or the independent state of San Marino. Within the summer months there are many regional cultural events like food specialities, open air cinema, concerts, theatre, expositions. In Poppi there is a language school that offers Italian lessons during the season.

Mountainbiking
Out of the house – directly onto the bike! Here you can live – and suffer - the whole range of mountainbiking and cope with sudorific ascents, rapid downhill runs and technically ambitious roadways. And you get always rewarded by the beauty of the surrounding/nature with wonderful views or places. My own experience on the singletrails and extensive maps enable a good and secure route planning. Among others, there’s available ‘Toscana in Mountainbike’ by Sergio Grillo + Cinzia Pezzani, in which 38 tours in the near or further surroundings are described and ‘In bici nel parco’ by the Administration of the National Park Foreste Casentinesi, whose 20 routes through the woods are well signed.
Hiking
Also hiking starts right at the house. Abandoned villages and magnificent views are always inviting for tours where much is to be discovered: the changing flora and fauna is attractive in every season. In the east and north the GEA (=Grande Escursione Appenninica), which is part of a European long-distance trekking path, surrounds our valley and passes also the nearby Franciscan monastery Chiusi della Verna (where San Francis of Assisi once lived) and the monastery and hermit of Camaldoli. Besides maps of the surroundings, we’ve got also the book ‚A piedi nel parco’, issued by the Administration of the National Park Foreste Casentinesi. But one holiday won’t be enough to walk all the 34 round tours, that are described in this book ...
