The mediaeval city of Piombino and the old Etruscan town Populonia are the two most notable points on the southern “Etruscan Riviera”. Together with the surrounding Val di Cornia they are a true treasure chest for art and culture lovers, for example with the Etruscan “City of the Dead” and the archaeological park in the countryside behind the Gulf of Baratti. Populonia was once the only Etruscan town which lay on the sea. The massive protective city walls once guarded its hill top position. Within the city walls one today finds a small and picturesque little town with interesting shops. By the sea is a little sheltered port with fishing-and tourist boots. In Piombino there has always been a strong metalworking tradition with the Romans working the iron from the island of Elba as early as the 5th century.
