Photos and Description of this County Galway holiday cottage 110-year-old cottage, tastefully restored in 2000, very historic place

The cottage is located in the heart of Joyce Country, Connemara at the Galway-Mayo border, surrounded by mountains and lakes with total privacy and tranquillity. Though the cottage is situated in a secluded location, it is still very central to all the sights and attractions of the Galway and Mayo regions. Connemara…The incredible landscape and vagaries of nature show that Connemara remains wild at heart. Embraced by craggy mountains and protected by its relative isolation, the region has remained a bastion of tradition, and is home to Ireland’s largest gaelacht (Irish speaking area).

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in County Galway, Ireland

Fishing in the area:: Species and season: Brown Trout: February 15th - September 30th* Salmon: February 1st - September 30th* Pike and Perch: all year. Fishing in Joyce County is concentrated in the large limestone loughs of Corrib and Mask. These lakes offer free fishing on clean, unpolluted waters amidst a backdrop of moor and mountain. Other options include hill loughs and river fishing. The area extends from the north of Lough Mask along the western shoreline of the lake past Tourmakeady and Churchfield (noted for its ferox trout) to Maamtrasna south-east to Ferrybridge and Rosshill. In the south of the area lies Lough Corrib with fishing available from Maam to Doorus and beyond that until the islands and shallows of the Carrick shore to the mouth of the Cong river. Shore fishing is possible but best results are reached from a boat and there are many locations where boats, engines etc. can be rented

Hill walking & trekking:: Since a long time Connemara has been regarded as a paradise for hikers. If walking is your pleasure, then there are numerous routes to choose from. There are lakeside, forest, hill, mountain, bog and riverbank walks with breathtaking views of an awesomely beautiful landscape. Long or short walks, there's a walk to suit most people. Several walks are described on the cottage website, including the Mount Gable, the Ballykine Forest, the Mellrea and the Killery Harbour walk.

A short history of the cottage:: Patrick Duffy, known as Pat Mor, was born in Finny in 1875, and being a stone mason by trade, he built this cottage in the late 1800´s. He lived in this small 3 roomed cottage with his wife Catherene Nee Joyce from Glenbeg, and their 8 sons. The boys were called Jimmy, Martin, Patrick, Fr. Willie, Fr. Peter, Michel, Tommy and Marcus. Next to being a stone mason, he was also a farmer. His stonework can be found all over the farm. Pat Mors Cottage was renovated between 1997and 2000.

Golf: Ireland is an ultimate golfing destination - with exceptional championship courses, staggering scenery and a truly warm welcome from the locals. There is a rich choice for golf enthusiasts. In the west of Ireland the nearest golf course to the cottage is Ashford Castle Golf Club (15 min drive) and Ballinrobe (20 min drive), and also Oughterard Golf Club Westport Golf Club Clew Bay Golf Club Connemara Championship Links (Balliconnelly), and Mulranny Golf Club

"Away From it All"

Steven & Carolyn Eugene, Oregon, USA
Review Submitted: April 16, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2009
Nestled on a mountainside in Joyce Country, Pat Mors Cottage is a perfect “get away from it all” destination. This 110-year-old, stone cottage has been lovingly restored by the owner to honor the original builder, his Great Uncle. The result is a cozy place to settle by the wood stove and enjoy the absence of traffic noise, television and telephones. Out the kitchen window, you look down on the hamlet of Finny and see Lough (Lake) Nafooey in the distance. Look to the east and you can catch a glimpse of an arm of Lough Mask. Climb up the ridge behind the cottage to catch a breathtaking view of Lough Mask and Lough Corrib. The cottage is perfectly located for exploring Joyce Country and the Connemara including nearby Cong (“The Quiet Man” was filmed there) and Ashford Castle; Leenane and Ireland’s fjord, Killary Harbour; taking the ferry from Cleggan to Inishbofin island for a day of walking; or heading to Westport and climbing nearby Croagh Patrick (said to be a pilgrimage site for over 5,000 years).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pat Mors Cottage and highly recommend that you include it in your travel plans.

The Cottage was Wonderful !!!

We stayed in March for a short honeymoon. It was everything we were promised online and so much more. It's secluded, peaceful, and the scenery was amazing. The cottage came equiped with everything we needed. Mr. Duffy the owner couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Our favorite was having dinner and a glass of wine outside at the table and watching the sun go down over the mountains and lake. We did activities nearby during the day but like the first reviewer just couldnt wait to go back to the cottage. I would definitely recommend this place.

Beautiful mountain retreat

Review Submitted: October 4, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
"I stayed at Pat Mors Cottage with a Canadian friend for a week in May 2008 and again with another Aussie for a week in early in April this year on my 6th visit to Ireland.

The problem with writing a favourable review for a cottage is that everybody who reads it then wants to stay there. I therefore run the risk of not being able to get a booking next time by confirming what the other 3 reviewers have already said.

Pat Mor's is quiet and peaceful. There are wonderful views. It is in a strategic location for touring into the Connemara and County Mayo. The owner, William, has provided wonderful, simple facilities that would take a very fussy and difficult person to be dissatisfied with. There are personal touches that I have not found in other cottages of higher rental elsewhere in Ireland such as a fully loaded rack of spices in the kitchen. My travel companion in May 08 was able to turn out great meals using the facilities that the owner had obviously put a lot of thought into providing.

You do need a car or bicycle to get around the area.

You can chill out and just stay put or use Pat Mor's as a base to car tour, cycle or hill walk and then come back to a comfortable, quiet and safe "home". Don't expect high tech things that open and shut. There is no phone or mobile phone reception and there is no TV! However, with the views to be had outside on the wide screen, who needs a TV? Internet? Try a pub in Clonbur or Cong.

A village shop and post office is not far away and larger shops are in Clonbur and Cong, with large supermarkets in Ballinrobe and Castlebar. Traditional music is around in the pub's and there is always Matt Molloy's Pub in Westport.

So there it is- my secret is out. I have found a nice, clean comfortable, restful place to stay that doesn't cost the earth and the owner of Pat Mor's couldn't be nicer. Would I go back next year? I may have to arm wrestle somebody to get a booking, but I'll be there.

Do I have a complaint? Yes, a couple. The laundry in the wood shed is better than none [as I found the following week in another cottage Donegal] but not as good as some and William is working on it. Using an electric razor with suitable light, power and mirror in the one place is interesting and oh, yes, almost forgot, William, leave the microwave there, please and don't draw a better map. I don't want too many people to find Pat Mor's Cottage."

Ein Juwel in den Bergen Connemaras

Birgit & Matthias Frankfurt, Germany
Review Submitted: August 8, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
