Only 18 km away from the most beautiful natural beach on the island in the middle of the central Majorcan level of Es Pla is the city of Porreres. The soft hills with forests, almond and apricot groves nearby, including the sheep herds on the lush, green grass creates a lovely landscape that is one of the most bucolistic on the island. Far from the main traffic hub of the island, Porreres was able to preserve its rural tranquillity. Porreres, whose roots go back to the year 1300, is a traditional commune with about 5000 residents. Just as before, it plays in important role in the country's agriculture. Just like everywhere on the island and in Europe, more and more farmers have given up their old occupation during the past five decades and old traditions have gone extinct, but 30 families here still live from agriculture. Porreres is proud of the best saffron.
