The trulli zone, north of Taranto, is green, hilly country, formerly forest, nowadays olive, almond and fruit trees, and it’s an important district for wine and vegetable growing. The fields of red-brown earth, often separated by dry stone walls, are a fascinating contrast. And emerging from this green sea of trees sparkling in the sunshine are the most unusual houses you can imagine, their cones pointing at the sky. These roundhouses or trulli are built by dry stone walling, and sometimes they stand alone, sometimes several of them are clumped together to form a group of houses.... they are usually scattered around the landscape... only in Alberobello is there a closed village built of trulli... the other villages and small towns are all built differently and they present the most appealing and imaginative spontaneous architecture in Italy. They were declared a world cultural heritage by UNESCO!
