Surroundings and Trip Suggestions:
Our house is situated in the calm surroundings of Sao Bartolomeu de Messines. It is owned and run by Germans.
Shopping facilities, restaurants, pubs, can be reached on foot in roughly 15 minutes.
Climate
Due to its mild climate Algarve is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal. In summer there is hardly a day of rain and water temperatures are around 21 to 22 degrees Celsius.
Spring: 10 - 18 degrees; summer: 18 - 31 degrees; fall: 18 - 25 degrees; winter: 10 - 18 degrees.
Algarve for cyclists
The countryside around Sao Bartolomeu de Messines, Sao Pedro or the reservoirs Barragem Funcho is perfectly suited for bicycle trips.

Day-trip destinations:
Route 264/269-1 to Armaca'o de Pera: romantic fishing town where outstanding fish restaurants can be found; the beaches are the most beautiful on the entire Algarve and just perfect for children. You can also embark on a boat trip along the coast, where fascinating rock formations, caves and grottos can be seen. Great panorama for photographers. Route 124-1 leads along the coast to Portimao - a typical Portuguese town, very charming, good shopping facilities and a beautiful fishing harbor. Back via route 124 through Silves, which features a Moor castle.
Swimming:
Route IC 1-125 to Faro, along the coast to 'Ria Formosa', a national park that features sand dunes several kilometers long. Ideal for swimming and hiking. Great variety of birds (flamingos, cormorants)
West Coast:
Day Trip - West Coast
Route 124- 124/1- 125 - Lagos - 125 - Sagres to Cape St. Vincent (Cape of the World, where the land ends and the sea begins). Here you will see natural forces in their purest form: gigantic rock formations and the undulation of the sea. The cliffs have a height of more than 60 m. This sight is absolutely unforgettable, especially at sun-set.
Route 268, some more miles along the marvelous steep coast to the wonderful sandy beaches of Aljezur - via route 267 along the Monchique Mountains to Caldas de Monchique, where mineral springs can be found, route 266 via Silves.

Around Sao Bartolomeu de Messines there are several interesting day-trip destinations suited for families. Here are some noteworthy examples:
Zoomarinepark - Route 264 toward Alcantarilha; dolphins, seals, sharks, turtles, crocodiles and exotic birds.
This park offers just about everything to make a family trip worthwhile: restaurants, stores, an amusement park and a swimming pool.
Slide & Splash - Aqualand in the vicinity of Lagos - Route 124-124/1. Aqualand is a waterpark that features plenty of attractions for all ages.
Open from April 29 to September 28. On 6 hectares of land you can indulge in a variety of activities that will make you feel the speed and your adrenaline level rise. Worthwhile activities are, for instance, Banzai Boggan, which features an exciting 22 meter slope, and the wave pool.
