During the summer, Crans-Montana is a golf center. The golf club of Crans-sur-Sierre has two golf courses (9 and 18 hole) and holds the annual Omega European Masters, one of the most famous golf tournaments in Europe.
During the late 1960s, a mountain race was held on the street from Sierre to Crans-Montana, which also belonged to the EBM.
Gondola lifts and rope lifts and a 135 km long path network for hikers and mountain bikers connect Crans-Montana with its glaciers, cliffs, mountain lakes, alps and forests on the southern edge of the Bern Alps. On the Kämmen at about 3000 m above sea level past wild along the Plaine-Morte glacier, Weisshorn, Mittaghorn, Rohrbachstein and Wetzsteinhorn, the language changes between French and German Swiss and at the same time, the canton border to the Bernese highlands is here as well. This network is also connected with the Lac de Tseuzier (1777 m above sea level).
From the lookout point of Bella Lui (2543 m) you can see the glaciers of the Wallis Alps south of the Rhone on a spectrum of the Mischabel group in the east up to the summits in the lower Wallis in the west, including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.
Access:
Crans-Montana is a tourism centre in the French speaking part of the Swiss canton of Wallis on the high plateau around the region of Montana, which grew with the newly created holiday settlement of Crans-sur-Sierre in 1929 and has become famous in the tourism world under this double name.
The holiday region includes five regions: Chermignon, Icogne, Lens, Mollens and Randogne along with a small row of smaller settlements on the slope high above the valley of the Rhone between Sion and Sierre.
Both from Sion and from Sierre you can take the curvy streets of the highway running through the Rhonetal. Over 13 kilometres, you will cover a difference in elevation of 1000 m. The drive through the mountains and alpine meadows from Sion takes about 35 minutes, from Sierre about 20 minutes.
From Sierre, there is also a rope lift available, from Sion also with a bus line.
Ski:
Crans-Montana became famous through countless events in the alpine ski sports. Thus, the alpine ski world championships were held here in 1987. Altogether, there are 160 km of ski slopes. On the southern edge of the Plaine-Morte-Glacier north of the city you will find three ski lifts that also allow for skiing during the summer.
Golf:
The most beautiful golf course of the Alps!
The course 'Severiano Ballesteros' (formerly named Plan-Bramois) is the reflection of the grandiose panorama of the 4000 m mountains across from it and fulfils the demands of all golfers.
The course 'Jack Nicklaus' with 9 holes also offers all players unforgettable challenges in stunning nature. For beginners (without handicap) there are the courses 'Super Crans' and 'Noas'.
The professional golfers who play every year in September at the Omega European Masters, the famous golf tournament after the British Open, have nothing but praise for the newly created course from Severiano Ballesteros, the best European golfer of the 20th century.
