Gaucin holiday apartment: GAUCIN, near RONDA, ANDALUCIA

The village of Gaucin: Gaucin,(population 2000) is one of the very attractive 'White Villages' of the Serrania de Ronda, about an hour's drive from Ronda itself. It is perched below the ruins of a Moorish castle (floodlit at night), and at 630m has magnificent views. The streets are winding, the pace pretty slow, and life is still relatively traditional for the local people here. Being one of the larger villages, however, it also has more facilities - particularly in season.There are several restaurants , traditional tapas bars, a flamenco bar, a number of small food shops, a bank, an ATM. It is a good centre for birdwatching (we are on a migratory route), and for walking (old smugglers trails!). The Serrania is a wonderful area for wild flowers in spring (and marvellous almond blossom in January on our land and in the Genal valley). Gaucin has various fiestas - processions in Easter week, the feria and the romeria in August, the feast of the local patron saint in September.

The surrounding area: The surrounding area is exceptionally beautiful, with lots of small villages to explore, caves, bird-watching (excellent), wild flowers, and walking. The nearest beach is approx 35/40 minutes away, but there are also lovely sandy beaches on the Atlantic coast (windsurfing at Tarifa) about 11/2 hours away. Ronda (1 hr), Estepona (beaches, beach bars), Marbella, and Puerto Banus are all within easy driving distance, and further afield are the historic cities of Sevilla, Jerez and Granada . Birdwatching is exceptional. Species seen from studio balcony include: Golden Eagle, Booted Eagle,Vulture, Kite, Short-Toed Eagle, Bee Eater, Firecrest, Nightingale, Montagu Harrier, Goshawk, Hobby, Crag Martin,Alpine Swift, Serin, Pied Flycatcher,Spotted Flycatcher,Willow Warbler, Honey Buzzard,Red-Rumped Swallow,Sand-Martin etc In the past, guests have always rented a car at the airport, but recently a number of people have come by train to Gaucin station and taken a taxi from there.

Practical: Airports: either Gibraltar (1 1/4 hours) or Malaga (motorway: 1 1/2 hours) Car rental advised so that you can explore, but TRAIN TO GAUCIN STATION (Estacion Gaucin) plus a taxi also works fine and more people are doing this every year!
