La Girondine is situated in St Exupéry 35 miles south east of Bordeaux city in the wine area known as the 'Entre-Deux-Mers' so named because it lies between 2 wide rivers, the Dordogne to the north and the Garonne to the south. St Exupéry is 8 kms from the small bastide town, Sauveterre de Guyenne, which has all shops including a supermarket. St Exupéry is a quiet hamlet of 10 houses and a church. The area is ideal for cycling and hiking The old railway line between Sauveterre and Bordeaux now provides 55kms of idyllic, dedicated cycle track.A hiking trail (chemin de randonnée) opposite the house leads down to the Vignague river.

Places to visit within 30kms of La Girondine

The historic bastide towns of Sauveterre de Guyenne and St Macaire are only a 10-minute car journey away. St Macaire boasts an excellent restaurant run by an English chef and offering vegetarian dishes. Many historical buildings dot the area and are only a short drive from 'La Girondine'. St Exupéry's own Romanesque church is a listed building. Not to mention all the pretty villages tucked away among the vineyards. Many famous painters and writers lived locally and you can visit the châteaux of Montesquieu, Mauriac and Toulouse-Lautrec as well as renowned wine chateaux. There are many local attractions to entertain you and your family: Medieval villages and towns: St Emilion, La Réole, Bazas, etc and the colourful markets in Créon (Wed) and Cadillac (Sat). Many local 'châteaux' offer tasting of their wines - Graves, Cotes de Bordeaux & Entre Deux Mers

A little further afield .....

The railway station at La Reole (7 kms) provides easy access to Bordeaux. If you prefer to drive, Bordeaux is reachable by motorway from Langon (50 mins) or along the beautiful D10 road which follows the Garonne valley. Atlantic beaches and the bay of Arcachon are just over an hour’s drive away, with miles of sandy beaches. The sand dune at Le Pyla is the highest in Europe and is a great favourite with families.
