Characterful place, mostly very good.

This is a very characterful property which provided a very relaxing and pleasant holiday base for two families (4 adults, 6 ch aged 7 - 11).
Main plus points :
- the house itself is very pleasant and original - going up a real stone spiral stairway to bed is exciting for children and adults. Adding to the ambience there are many original works of art (minor artists, but well chosen), artefacts and also a small, well-chosen library
- the garden is superb - well sized, full of mature lawn, plants & shrubs and not at all 'precious'. So idealfor sitting out and reading a book or for playing sports/games.
- the functional parts of the house (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom) are acceptable - not brilliant, but no impediment to enjoyment.
- the location is in a very quiet and peaceful rural area . However it is easy to get to some interesting places, especially if you have a car. By car the nearby town of Periers is < 10 mins away. The beaches of the Cotentin W coast are between 20 - 40 mins away (Carteret was the best one we found). Bayeux is ~ 60 mins away. Utah beaches via the interesting St-Mere-Eglise in < 60 mins.
- access to bikes : you get to use the owner's stock of bikes on an ad hoc basis. They all needed a bit of air in the tyres, and were serviceable for short trips - Periers is ~ 30 mins on a quiet route.
and the main areas for improvement :
- the accommodation is as described, however, our experience was the the downstairs double-bedroom was dank, dark and low-ceilinged. It was only occupied by one adult couple of our party for one night - they promptly declared the bed to be uncomfortable and damp. So we ended up not using that room again.
- Also, the "a further room which can be used to sleep child/children" in fact turns out to be the entrance hall. its a bit complex because there are 2 doors into the property, but in the configuration we were given, this room was not usable as a bedroom.
- We had a small issue on checkout, where the letter confirming the booking stated cleaning at 30-40EUR aand the landlady request 60EUR. The difference was eventually 'split', but this felt galling and unnecessary - the house was not cleaned to a very high standard when we arrived (it just isn't that kind of place anyway). Surely better for the owners to include cleaning in the letting price and use the damage deposit to cover any exceptional costs on check-out.
