Pitigliano is located in Maremma region, in Tuscany. Visiting Pitigliano is like turning back in the Middle Ages. The village is built on a volcanic rock promontory surrounded by bright green valleys, grooved by the Lente and Meleta rivers. Pitigliano takes pride in its heritage from the prehistoric period, the Etruscan-Roman period (that left behind the town's name 'Gens Petilia') to the medieval period of Aldobrandeschi, Orsini, Medici, Lorraine families. Pitigliano has been called 'Little Jerusalem' because of its large and active Jewish population which settled there beginning in the 15th century. Today the Synagogue is once again open to visit. The village is surrounded by important archaeological sites, from the ancient 'vie cave' to the various Etruscan necropolis and prehistoric settlements. Other good reasons to visit Pitigliano are the vineyards and the olive trees that cultivated in volcanic land produce prestigious wines and olive oil.
