This delightful old cottage, dating from around 1750, stands in a beautiful wooded valley by the West Looe estuary. This idyllic spot is perfect for birdwatchers and walkers. The sound of the stream running nearby adds to the feeling of tranquillity. There is a pretty 45 minute walk through Kilminorth woods beside the estuary to the lively town of Looe. Several beaches, the picturesque old fishing village of Polperro and the South West coast path are a short distance away. The oak beamed sitting room with wood burning stove is very cosy. The small garden terrace with table, chairs & barbecue is perfect for a relaxing meal 'al fresco'.

The cottage is in a beautiful, secluded valley close to the West Looe estuary. The surrounding woods and river are home to a huge variety of birds and other wildlife. The nearby port of Looe is an unspoilt fishing village dating back to the 12th century. It has many historic buildings including smugglers' pubs and some of Cornwall's finest restaurants. There is a gently shelving child-friendly beach and the coast is excellent for sport fishing. A short drive leads to the picturesque village of Polperro - crammed into a gash in the cliffs, its position is truly breath-taking. For the more energetic walking the South West coast path is a fantastic way to enjoy the glorious scenery.

Provisions: Looe has a good selection of small shops. In particular there is an excellent fresh fish shop right by the fish market on the quay. There is a good village shop in Pelynt (10 mins by car). For larger supermarkets Liskeard is the best bet (20 mins by car).

Pets: We welcome pets and responsible owners. Please clear up after your pet, in particularly in the area around the cottage and the neighbours' houses. Pets are most definitely not allowed in the bedrooms or on the furniture.

A home from home

This is a beautiful old cottage in a perfect location if you want peace and quiet and to enjoy nature. There is a bird feeder right outside the kitchen door so on a morning you can just sit and watch the birds (and sometimes squirrel) enjoying their breakfast. The owners supply the bird seed too so all you have to do is fill the feeder up. We watched herons and kingfishers on the estuary just yards from the front door too. The log fire is very welcoming and the cottage is very well equipped with everything you could possibly need to make it feel just like home. The walk into Looe next to the estuary is lovely, but do be aware of high tides. We got cut off one day and had to do a detour into the woods! Do go to the Jubilee Inn for a pub meal in Pelynt. We had the best meals ever!

Very well equipped cottage

We, a family of four with two children aged 12 and 10, had a lovely stay in the Watergate cottage in the last week of April. The children were very happy with the bunk bed although my 12 year old son found out that he had grown to tall to fit into this bed and switched to the other bedroom later in the week. The area surrounding the cottage is really wonderful. The walk over to Looe along the river and back over the hills is really nice. Looe is a nice town to stay in. The nearby Jubillee Inn is an excellent place to eat and drink. We would certainly recommend this cottage to friends and relatives.

The bunk beds have full size single mattresses on so this must have been an exceptionally tall lad!!

Peace, Quiet & Fresh Air

Our family of six plus dog were easily accommodated in this lovely old cottage, around 1.5 miles from the centre of Looe. If hearing a pin drop and seeing millions of stars at night is your thing, then this is where you need to go. Surrounded by babbling brooks and dense woodland, the walks are fantastic, especially into Looe as more than one route is available. And it was a shock to see a car go past on the lane outside the window! Use it as a great centre to explore the rest of Cornwall, with no other beach being far - the longest we were in the car was around an hour, and that was to go to the far west of the peninsula. Ample provisions available from the Co-Op and Somerfield stores in Looe, or Morrisons in Liskeard is only 7 miles away. And the fish market on the quay provides wonderful fresh fish up to 4.30pm. The property has a very large kitchen diner, a lovely log burner in the lounge with a generous supply of logs in the wood store to the rear. There is SKY TV for those who need a clear picture on the tele. Thoroughly recommended, but make sure you listen to all your voicemails and look at emails/texts while your out and about as there is no mobile signal at Watergate. The owners of the house do helpfully provide a landline phone which can be used for incming and outgoing calls however.
