Roussillon and the Luberon:
Roussillon attracts and inspires its fair share of painters, poets and musicians. It looks stunning whatever the season, perched high on an ochre crag above the Luberon valley. The Luberon mountain is to the south, the Monts de Vaucluse to the north. In between are the patchwork of vineyards, orchards, cypress trees and olive groves, with the occasional hill-top village dotting the landscape as a point of reference. This is the Provence you see in calendars and coffee-table books. You can explore this land on foot, on a bike, by car, on horseback, even by hot-air balloon. Most of the villages here are rightly enshrined in the association of the Most Beautiful Villages in France: Roussillon itself, Menerbes (home of 'A Year in Provence'), Bonnieux, Gordes, Lacoste, Oppede-le-vieux, Lourmarin, Goult, St Saturnin, etc.
