Birthplace of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, Jesi, the only “royal town” of its kind, lies in the Esino River valley, at the centre of the Marche Region. Its complex history has defined a strong territorial identity and though the citadel was destroyed several times, it always managed to rise again. Jesi’s main landmarks are the majestic Palazzo della Signoria, built around 1490 and the Pergolesi Theatre, opened in 1798. Palazzo Pianetti, another architectural jewel with its magnificent rococo staircase, houses the Municipal Art Gallery. There are several excellent wines produced in the area, wine-growing being an ancient tradition of the Marche dating back to the Etruscans and Greeks. From the hills surrounding Jesi comes the prince of wines: Verdicchio. Tourist and historical attractions nearby include Urbino, Loreto, the beautiful Riviera del Conero, the spectacular Caves of Frasassi and, in the summer, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro and the Arena Sferisterio in Macerata.
