Belém is known as one of the most beautiful, historical places in Lisbon. Belém was the departure point of most of the world-changing explorations, during the Age of Discoveries. Here you find the most important monuments; such as the spectacular Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (where Vasco da Gama is buried) this magnificent monastery and its church are considered Portugal premier work of Renaissance, Torre de Belém which was built on the north bank of the Tagus River to defend Lisbon and Padrão dos Descobrimentos. Belém is also known because of its beautiful museums. The National Museum of Coaches is one of the most visited in Portugal. This is placed in the former Royal Riding School, which occupies the Eastern wing of Belém Palace (Nowadays the Official Residence of the President). On walking distance you find the principal pier of Lisbon: `docas´, the docks, famous by its nightlife and amusements such as bars, restaurants, discos and pubs.
